San Diego Comic-Con Human Trafficking Sting Busts 14 Criminals, Saves 10 Victims

As a seasoned Comic-Con attendee with over two decades of conventions under my belt, I can confidently say that while the event is a magical world of cosplay, celebrity encounters, and exclusive reveals, it’s not without its darker side. The recent arrests by the San Diego Human Trafficking Task Force during this year’s convention serve as a grim reminder that even in our vibrant geek culture, crime can lurk in the shadows.

2021’s San Diego Comic-Con was livelier compared to the 2023 version, thanks to the news that Robert Downey Jr. will reprise his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Doctor Doom, along with other exciting updates. Additionally, an arrest by the city’s Human Trafficking Task Force drew significant attention during this event.

On July 30, California’s Department of Justice announced that they apprehended several suspects at the San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC). Over the course of the convention’s three days, a covert operation focused on detaining sex buyers and individuals involved in trafficking people for prostitution purposes resulted in the arrest of 14 individuals. This operation also managed to save 10 victims from exploitation, including a 16-year-old girl. Those who were saved have been provided with support services by advocates working with adults and minors. The suspects are currently being processed.

Regrettably, criminals who traffic people for sexual purposes often seize opportunities provided by big events like Comic-Con to make money off their victims. The recent arrests serve as a warning to would-be perpetrators that such illegal activities will not be accepted. We extend our heartfelt appreciation to every partner working tirelessly on the San Diego Human Trafficking Task Force, whose combined efforts have been crucial. Our office is proud of its dedication towards empowering vulnerable Californians by providing aid and direction during their most critical moments, as stated by California Attorney General Rob Bonta in a released statement via CDJ.

It’s common for crime to occur at large, public events with many people, such as the San Diego Comic-Con. Although some individuals choose not to attend, this year saw over 100,000 attendees, and given its size, there’s a likelihood of trouble arising. Previously, an incident involving crime has been reported at this convention.

Previous SDCCs haven’t been free of incident

Previously, incidents involving true crime have occurred at San Diego Comic-Con, such as the case in 2014 when a 17-year-old girl was discovered severely injured in a hotel following the convention. According to Polygon, this incident happened at the San Diego Marriott Marquis and Marina Hotel, where the victim was found unconscious and bleeding near the pool area. Initially reported as a physical and sexual assault, later surveillance footage suggested that the girl had fallen and sustained injuries including skull and eye-socket fractures, cerebral hemorrhaging, and other traumas. She was rushed to a hospital’s intensive care unit for treatment and eventually reunited with her family.

In a subsequent development, 29-year-old Justin Kalior found himself under arrest and indicted on charges of sexual misconduct with a minor and encouraging delinquency in a minor. Despite his claims that their relationship was platonic, evidence gathered from a police report obtained via a freedom of information request suggests they were actually dating. Text messages exchanged between them, which the authorities accessed consensually from the victim’s phone, indicated that Kalior had taken her to a party where alcohol was available on the night in question. The police report also includes testimonies of witnesses who saw a physical altercation between them, and texts from Kalior’s phone suggest a recent break-up. At this moment, he has not been charged with any crime related to the fall, and it remains unclear if the other two accusations have been withdrawn.
