As a cinephile who’s been around the block more times than I care to remember, let me tell you that the 72nd San Sebastian Film Festival is shaping up to be a real treat for us film enthusiasts! The world premiere of Audrey Diwan’s ‘Emmanuelle’, with its stellar cast including Noémie Merlant, Naomi Watts, Will Sharpe, and Jamie Campbell Bower, promises an exploration of eroticism in the post-#MeToo era – a topic that’s as relevant today as it was when Emmanuelle Arsan’s erotic novel first hit the shelves.
The 72nd San Sebastian International Film Festival has started, following the debut presentation of Audrey Diwan’s provocative film titled “Emmanuelle,” which ignited the celebrations in Spain.
The movie in question features notable actors like Noémie Merlant (known for “Portrait of a Lady on Fire”), Naomi Watts (renowned for “Mullholland Drive” and “Birdman”), Will Sharpe (“The White Lotus”) and Jamie Campbell Bower (“Stranger Things”). It is based on Emmanuelle Arsan’s provocative novel. Joining them in the cast are Chacha Huang and Anthony Wong, with the exception of Naomi Watts who had a more substantial role prior to the screening at the Kursaal Theater, where others made brief appearances before the premiere.
The director’s movie revolves around Emmanuelle (Merlant), a woman on a business journey with a high-end hotel chain in Hong Kong. In pursuit of rediscovered passion, she explores sensual encounters with some of the hotel’s patrons. However, one particular guest, Kei (Sharpe), consistently evades her. The script was originally designed as an examination of eroticism in the post-#MeToo period, according to Diwan.
The filmmaker from France who collaborated with Rebecca Zlotowski on the script for “Emmanuelle,” received the highly esteemed Golden Lion at Venice in 2021, for her movie titled “Happening.” This event is one of the most glamorous lineups ever seen at San Sebastian Film Festival. During that week along the Spanish coast, there are awards planned for Cate Blanchett, Javier Bardem and Pedro Almodóvar.
Pedro Almodóvar’s debut English film, titled “The Room Next Door“, received a stunning 17-minute standing ovation at this month’s Venice Film Festival. Gratefully acknowledging the audience, Almodóvar was joined on stage by the movie’s stars, Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore.
San Sebastian is gearing up for awards season with some big-name productions. Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield’s movie “We Live In Time” will close the festival, while films like Edward Berger’s “Conclave”, Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis”, and Sean Baker’s “Anora” are also scheduled for screenings.
Neon Corporation is reportedly acquiring U.S. distribution rights for the movie, while Emmanuelle will make its French theater debut on September 25th, distributed by Pathé.
