Indian civil servant and educational figure Vikas Divyakirti spoke out against the movie Animal, directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga. Known for running an IAS coaching institute and having a large following on social media, Divyakirti voiced significant displeasure with the film starring Ranbir Kapoor. In response to his comments, Sandeep Reddy Vanga has now addressed the criticism, stating that when someone attacks you without just cause, it is inevitable to feel anger.
During a recent conversation with Komal Nahata, filmmaker Sandeep Reddy Vanga expressed his thoughts about the topic and stated that his words may have given off an impression that making such a film is a grave mistake. Vanga drew a parallel between Animal and 12th Fail, suggesting that while one movie motivates people, the other potentially worsens societal progress.
In response to the criticism, the speaker admitted that unjustified attacks could stir up anger. The filmmaker clarified that becoming an IAS officer involves a systematic process—applying to a specific institution, studying particular books, and investing several years in preparation. He also highlighted that the person under discussion operates a coaching institute.
Yet, he underscored the point that unlike the IAS exam, skills such as filmmaking and writing aren’t solely acquired through structured courses or guided by one mentor alone.
He argued against the notion that a movie alone could significantly set society back, pondering over past events, particularly remembering when his father encouraged him by stating that through dedicated work, he could excel in challenging exams or even pursue a career in medicine.
Despite accepting that his job didn’t entail saving lives or changing the world dramatically, he found himself pondering whether a film could potentially have detrimental effects on society. At first, this line of thought provoked some annoyance within him, but soon enough, he let it go from his mind, until the topic was revisited once more.
In case you’re not aware, during an interview with Neelesh Misra on his Slow Interview series, Vikas Divyakirti expressed his disapproval of the movie “Animal,” adding his voice to a chorus of celebrities who have criticized the film. He contends that films like these hinder societal progress by about a decade and raises concerns about their overall influence.
Divyakirti noted that although the movie brought in a lot of money, it seemed to overlook its duty towards society. He pondered if it’s appropriate for filmmakers to solely chase monetary profits. Instead, he suggested that stories should carry some significance for society, presenting characters not as animals, but as role models with meaningful messages.
