Sanrio is stirring up feelings of nostalgia, partnering with Netflix for a fresh take on their Japanese animation collection. The streaming service is introducing a new stop-motion series centered around My Melody & Kuromi, two of the most cherished characters from the Sanrio clan. Their very own show is set to premiere this summer.
1975 saw the introduction of My Melody, and Kuromi, who made her appearance in 2005 and often claims to be My Melody’s rival, have both remained popular among a global fanbase. These characters are distinct in their personalities, with My Melody being a kind, straightforward girl deeply attached to her younger brother and mother, especially during cookie-baking sessions. In contrast, Kuromi is known for her mischievous behavior, consistently ranking in the top three of Sanrio’s character rankings as of 2024.
Director Tomoki Misato is set to lead a project that commemorates the 50th anniversary of My Melody and the 20th anniversary of Kuromi this year. In an announcement, Misato expressed his excitement, stating, “I’m delighted that we can launch this project in this significant year, celebrating the 50th anniversary of My Melody and the 20th anniversary of Kuromi. This ambitious project has inspired us to collaborate, face numerous challenges, and explore the boundaries of stop-motion animation. I look forward to everyone enjoying this engaging story set within our meticulously crafted Mariland, the exhilarating action that pushes the limits of stop-motion, and, naturally, the adorable and lively characters.” This will be Studio Toruku’s inaugural foray into a stop-motion animation series. Renowned playwright Shuko Nemoto wrote the script during the pandemic.
Netflix is set to release the stop-motion series in July 2025.
