As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I can’t help but feel disheartened when it comes to the recent turn of events regarding Shahana Goswami‘s critically acclaimed film, Santosh, helmed by the talented Sandhya Suri. This masterpiece, which had been selected as the UK’s entry to the Oscars and even made it to the shortlist, has unfortunately encountered a roadblock – the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has requested modifications before its release. As an ardent fan, I eagerly await to see this movie on the big screen, and I hope these modifications will not compromise the film’s original essence and power that had earned it such recognition.
As reported by India Today, the Cinema Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has requested several edits on the movie titled “Santosh”. They’ve taken issue with the portrayal of the police in the film and have criticized its exploration of sensitive social topics like caste discrimination and police violence, which are central themes within the story.
As a lifestyle expert, I’d rephrase it like this: In a recent interview, Shahana Goswami openly discussed the obstacles the team is facing. She stated that they vehemently oppose the proposed changes because they would significantly alter the film. The actress underlined the predicament we find ourselves in – the movie might not hit Indian theaters due to this standoff.
As a connoisseur of culture, I find it disheartening that a production, already vetted during the scripting phase, needs such extensive edits and alterations just to meet the criteria for public viewing in India.
Beyond this point, it’s worth noting that Santosh’s writer-director, Sandhya Suri, shared her feelings about the censor board’s decision with The Guardian, calling it both “disappointing” and “heartbreaking”.
She expressed that it was unexpected since the topics addressed in the film weren’t entirely novel to Indian cinema and had already been explored by previous movies. The filmmaker pointed out that the proposed modifications by the CBFC were deemed “unfeasible” to carry out.
Suri delved less into the proposed adjustments because of legal limitations, yet she disclosed that the reduction section extended over numerous pages and encompassed worries regarding police behavior and broader social issues, which are significantly embedded within the movie.
She shared, “I really wanted the movie to be shown in India, so I gave it some thought to see if there was a feasible way to do this. However, I found it extremely challenging to make the necessary cuts while keeping the film coherent and adhering to its original vision.
In summary, Suri argued that her movie does not romanticize violence like other cop-centric films often do, and emphasized that it lacks any sensational elements.
