Saoirse Ronan Says She Was “Sad” When Ryan Gosling Was Fired From ‘The Lovely Bones’

As a seasoned gamer who’s been through more movie setbacks than I’ve had controller breakdowns, I can empathize with Saoirse Ronan‘s feelings about Ryan Gosling not being in “The Lovely Bones”. Having spent countless hours imagining what it would be like to play alongside my favorite characters, only to have them replaced by less-than-ideal stand-ins, I get the disappointment.

Saoirse Ronan said she was “sad” when Ryan Gosling was dropped from the movie The Lovely Bones.

In the 2009 movie directed by Peter Jackson, the actress found herself acting alongside Mark Wahlberg. The storyline revolved around her character, a girl who had been murdered and now observed her family and her killer from purgatory while they dealt with healing. Wahlberg portrayed her grieving father after Gosling was dismissed from the role.

The actress from “Lady Bird” recently shared on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, hosted by Josh Horowitz, that although they didn’t film together initially, she and Ryan Gosling had prepared for their roles beforehand. She admitted, “I think I was just fond of Ryan, and his dog George. It was unfortunate that he wouldn’t be present during the filming.

Ronan found the circumstances that led to the split between the Barbie star and the director to be “completely understandable.” She went on to say, “I’ve had conversations with both [Gosling and Jackson], and it simply happens. You know what I’m getting at? It’s not always about personal feelings. Sometimes, you just don’t see eye to eye.

She added: “Mark took on the role of a father for around three children. This might have been something Ryan lacked experience with, given his age of 27.

Previously, the actor from “The Fall Guy” shared with The Hollywood Reporter in 2010 that he was dismissed from “The Lovely Bones” due to a disagreement with director Peter Jackson about how the character should appear. He strongly felt the character should weigh around 210 pounds, which was not in line with Jackson’s vision.

However, the director had a differing opinion, eventually deciding to part ways with Gosling mere days prior to filming’s commencement in 2007.

As a fan looking back, I recall that during pre-production, our communication was rather limited – a challenge I later realized stemmed from the film’s massive scale and the pressure to handle numerous aspects. Ryan Gosling shared this sentiment, explaining that individual actor attention wasn’t feasible given the situation. So, on set, I found myself off base, leading to some missteps. Afterward, I gained weight and faced unemployment.

Later on, Ronan shared with Horowitz that it was a “wonderful” experience collaborating with Gosling during the filming of their 2014 movie ‘Lost River’. She further mentioned, “Moreover, he remains consistent. There’s no alteration in him.
