Taylor Swift is well-accustomed to public scrutiny, but it certainly isn’t always an easy ride. For instance, she often faces enthusiastic fans when dining out, and not too long ago, she encountered jeers during the Super Bowl. Following this event going viral, Saquon Barkley, a running back who played for the Philadelphia Eagles against Travis Kelce’s Kansas City Chiefs in yesterday’s game, has shared his thoughts on why such booing was unnecessary.
During the Super Bowl when Taylor Swift’s boyfriend Travis Kelce and the Kansas City Chiefs faced off against the Eagles, some viewers chose to jeer Taylor Swift when she appeared on the big screen. This response left her baffled, as it did me, as well as Saquon Barkley, who later shared his puzzlement about it on The Howard Stern Show.
Back then, I recall seeing Taylor Swift on the giant screen, yet she faced boos instead of cheers. Frankly, I can’t wrap my head around it. It seems bizarre to me why she was receiving such negativity there. After all, she was simply showing up in support of her partner, and in doing so, made the event more significant… I just don’t understand the harsh treatment she received.
After being questioned about rumors of Kelce proposing to Swift, Barkley chose instead (through ESPN) to discuss the strange reactions many had towards her attending the game. He pointed out that she’s contributed to increasing NFL viewership and he finds it hard to comprehend why some people think this is a negative thing.
We aim to broaden the scope of the game, and her involvement is proving beneficial. I find it puzzling why she’s receiving such negative feedback.
Mainly, it appeared that the cheers were predominantly from Eagles supporters, as ESPN pointed out, since Swift supports Kelce and the Chiefs. In essence, this scenario mirrors when the “Bad Blood” singer began attending her boyfriend’s games. There was much debate about whether the NFL was excessively highlighting the pop star, and there was a significant amount of criticism directed at her. However, despite the controversy, her presence has contributed to the growth of both the Chiefs’ and NFL’s fan bases – which Barkley hinted at in his response.
To sum up, it was unexpected to find the player expressing an opinion about this situation given his previous team was the victor. Yet, they both represent the same organization as Jason Kelce’s brother, Travis, did, and it seems he holds Swift in high regard. Regardless of your affiliations, booing her without justification appears illogical, and Barkley’s perspective on this matter underscores that point.
Over the past week, Swift and the Super Bowl have been subjects of much discussion. From theories as to why Blake Lively wasn’t present with her, to conjectures about her potential halftime performance, the interest has been widespread and intense. Constantly under the spotlight means constant criticism that often lacks substance. As Saquon Barkley put it, she was simply there to cheer for her boyfriend and enjoy football, not causing any stir.
