Sasha Bhasin has had quite a year already.
This year, the up-and-coming actress became part of the cast for Netflix’s romantic comedy-drama spinoff series XO, Kitty, portraying Praveena. In this role, she was introduced as a potential love interest for the main character, who is played by Anna Cathcart.
After settling into the show ‘XO, Kitty’, I felt at ease, and it seemed like Praveena also did,” Bhasin shared with The Hollywood Reporter about her experience on this popular YA series that has just been renewed for a third season. “Though she’s new to the cast, she appeared comfortable in the environment where she was working.
Apart from Max’s medical series, titled “The Pitt“, Bhasin has also signed up to portray the character Nandi, a popular figure who is also a patient. “I’m simply savoring this moment and just being fully present,” she expresses.
In the following conversation, Bhasin discusses her recent acting ventures, her concerns as an actor, and future projects that excite her with THR (The Hollywood Reporter).
As a huge fan myself, I must say that playing my character in XO, Kitty has been an absolute joy! When I first read the script, I was immediately drawn to the unique energy and charm my character brings to the ensemble. The opportunity to be part of such a dynamic cast and bring this character to life was simply too exciting to resist!
Joining a show of this caliber during its second season can be quite intimidating, as it’s my first production at such a high level. The fact that I was flown to Korea for a Netflix show that everyone adores added to the anxiety. However, once I arrived and met the cast, I instantly felt comfortable, like we all have a wonderful rapport. It’s genuinely fun, and it mirrors the camaraderie depicted on the show. In essence, it feels like being part of a close-knit group of friends.
What was it like working in Seoul and getting to kind of be on location there?
Man, that was absolutely fantastic! To this day, it remains the most extraordinary encounter I’ve ever had. Being given the opportunity to travel, and finding myself right in the heart of… Well, I’d never been to East Asia, even though I’m Indian. Born in India, I’ve yet to return, and I still haven’t. It felt like a dream. The idea of spending two and a half months immersed in Seoul, living the best time of my life, exploring Korean culture, savoring the food, enjoying karaoke, and meeting the people was simply exhilarating. It was an unforgettable experience.
In the series “XO, Kitty,” you’re the latest addition to the filming location, although there were several new cast members in season two. Could it be that this similarity between your character and hers – both being newcomers – adds a unique element to the show?
There was a hint of similarity since I’m working alongside seasoned veterans like Anna Cathcart, who has years of experience under her belt, and other cast members with vast expertise. However, as soon as I arrived, I felt at ease, and it seemed to me that Praveena also felt comfortable, despite being new to the environment. She may be a novice compared to the others, but she carried herself with an air of familiarity.
As a gamer, I was thrilled and a bit nervous when I learned I’d be playing as Praveena. I knew her character would likely spark some exciting fan reactions, and I was eager to bring her to life in the game.
Whatever Kitty does is usually disorganized, yet I find that the part focusing on Kitty and Praveena’s relationship offers a captivating portrayal of queer identity. I believe it’s particularly poignant when you’re young, like during high school, as you navigate your own identity. To me, this depiction is very touching. The show effectively conveys the message that things aren’t set in stone; rather, self-discovery and growth are ongoing processes. I think this dynamic between Kitty and Praveena, with Praveena being certain about her sexual identity while Kitty is still finding her way, is beautiful. I believe it’s beneficial for everyone to have a friend like Praveena and Kitty; their relationship is truly heartwarming.
How familiar were you with the movies and even XO, Kitty when you joined?
I absolutely adored it! I’ve watched every movie in the series. Initially, when the audition for a major Netflix show came along, I was taken aback, thinking it wasn’t meant for me. But then, I decided to give it a try and see what would happen. As things progressed, they kept going smoothly. When it came time for the chemistry read with Anna, part of the audition process included a call back with the showrunner and casting director, after which I was called in for the chemistry read. At that moment, I had this strange feeling that I might be heading to Korea!
In other words: I enjoyed every bit of it! I’ve seen all the movies they made. When an audition opportunity for a big Netflix show popped up, I wasn’t expecting to get it. So I decided to give it a shot and see where it led. As things moved forward, everything seemed to fall into place. During the audition process, there was a chemistry read with Anna. This included a call back with the showrunner and casting director before the actual read. At that stage, I had this strange sensation that I might be going to Korea!
I’d like to know what response you anticipate towards Season 2 of XO, Kitty, not just for me personally as an actor and my character, but overall. What kind of impact do you think it will have on the audience and the storyline?
I’d like those who watch the entire series to understand that they’re not isolated, as we all share similar complexities and imperfections. The show explores various aspects of people we admire and those we don’t, demonstrating that nobody is perfect. Remember, you’re not alone in your struggles or emotions. I hope it brings a great deal of pleasure. What initially attracted me to XO, Kitty was the joy it brought me even before I knew about the audition. The show makes me smile throughout; it’s captivating, delightful, and humorous. It provides an instant escape after a tough day, immersing you in another world.
I’m thrilled if viewers find themselves transported to the stunning city of Seoul through this show. Observing it is truly captivating. It leaves one wondering how someone can consistently maintain such a cool, calm, and composed demeanor. In my opinion, Praveena serves as an inspiration for many Indian and South Asian girls watching. Praveena is queer and South Asian, but her identity isn’t the focus; instead, she’s just a student at school who also happens to be queer and South Asian. This representation feels natural and unforced, and I hope it encourages young South Asians and people of color to think, “Wow, that’s normal. That’s okay.” I appreciate this aspect of Praveena’s characterization.
Does it weigh a little bit on you more knowing that?
Speaking honestly, XO, Kitty fills me with optimism. I’m overjoyed that future shows and films might follow in its footsteps, skillfully integrating the queer community and people of color into everyday life, as it should be. Nothing about it feels contrived or engineered, which is a relief because I believe it will resonate positively with audiences. Watching this show made me wish I had something similar growing up. I think, XO, Kitty, you’ve shown us the way. Now, let’s encourage more creators to step up and continue exploring these queer narratives and stories of people of color.
In past media, there were moments when queer representation felt forced or awkward. For instance, revisiting shows like Friends, I realized how little diversity and representation there was. Queer characters were often made fun of or used as a joke, perpetuating harmful stereotypes. However, in today’s world, it’s heartening to see stories like XO, Kitty being told with sensitivity and authenticity by creators who understand these communities. This is why the portrayal feels so organic and genuine.
At this significant moment in your professional journey, I’m curious about how you’re experiencing the anticipation of potentially embarking on a new phase of your career.
Currently, there’s a sense of anticipation that’s building up. It stems from the apprehension that comes with being an actor, taking on something significant such as XO, Kitty, and having recently wrapped up The Pitt. This was my initial experience in L.A., and I have a film upcoming. There’s quite a bit going on right now, and I find myself battling the fear that “This could be your final role, and you might never work again.” Since my journey began with Brave the Dark, continued with XO, Kitty and then onto The Pitt, I’ve grown exponentially as an actor. Now, I yearn for more opportunities to continue working, to keep entertaining people, and bring to life characters that resonate with society, particularly in our contemporary world. It’s a privilege for me, as an Indian girl, to be able to do something meaningful for my inner child. Growing up, I never saw Indian children on TV, nor did I see representation of queer individuals or relatable stories. So, I wish to carry on and strive to honor the people who identify with me.
What kind of roles are you manifesting for yourself? What are you dying to do?
Recently, I caught the movie “Maria” starring Angelina Jolie. She’s been my inspiration for delving into acting, and discussing her always stirs deep emotions within me. Her remarkable versatility and transformation from a wild persona into an elegant figure is truly inspiring. The roles I aspire to play mirror this journey. For instance, Mia Goth in the “X” Trilogy captivates me. I’m a fan of thrillers above all else, and movies like “Hereditary” fall right within my favorite genre. A24 is a dream on my vision board, symbolizing my passion for the eerie and spine-chilling. These elements are what I crave, and I eagerly anticipate incorporating them into my future work. As I prepare, I’m honing my skills by crafting characters before anything else. When auditions aren’t forthcoming, I spend time experimenting with different voices, outfits, and mannerisms to build these characters. This way, when an opportunity arises, I can swiftly bring them to life within a day or two.
Prior to the audition for XO, Kitty, I discovered that Praveena had already been fully developed by someone else. In this role as an actor, which is incredibly enjoyable, my task essentially involves pretending and using my imagination. I spend time in my room engaging in make-believe, and if I stumble upon something intriguing, I jot it down for future reference. I keep track of my emotions so that when the audition arrives, I can simply draw from this collection of feelings.
