Ah, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has decided to play the role of the gallant knight, charging six individuals in a most extravagant food stamp and bribery escapade. One can only imagine the audacity!
In a press release that could rival the most sensational of novels, the DOJ has unveiled charges against a merry band of miscreants who have allegedly pilfered a staggering $66 million from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). One must wonder if they were planning to open a gourmet restaurant with such ill-gotten gains!
The rogues in question – Michael Kehoe, Mohamad Nawafleh, Omar Alrawashdeh, Gamal Obaid, Emad Alrawashdeh, and the illustrious Arlasa Davis – are accused of conspiring to steal government funds and misappropriating U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) benefits. Quite the résumé, wouldn’t you say?
Authorities, in their infinite wisdom, claim that since 2019, our dear Kehoe and his band of merry men have been submitting fraudulent applications to acquire machine terminals. These terminals, mind you, accepted payments from SNAP recipients at the most unexpected of venues, including smoke shops. Who knew the path to culinary delight could be so convoluted?
SNAP recipients, armed with their specialized payment cards, were unwittingly led to purchase food at these dubious establishments. According to the press release, Kehoe set up a veritable empire of 160 illegal terminals across New York, processing millions in fraudulent EBT (Electronic Benefit Transfer) transactions. One can only applaud the sheer audacity!
And let us not forget the cunning Davis, who, in her role at the USDA, allegedly used her position to procure and distribute a list of license numbers for qualifying stores. This little trick allowed the thieves to obtain EBT terminals for establishments that were decidedly not on the USDA’s guest list. In return, she received bribes disguised as gifts. How charmingly corrupt!
As U.S. Attorney Perry Carbone so eloquently stated,
“Michael Kehoe and his co-conspirators misappropriated tens of millions of dollars in taxpayer funds meant to help low-income families put food on the table. This fraud was made possible when USDA employee Arlasa Davis betrayed the public trust by selling confidential government information to the very criminals she was supposed to catch.”
“Their actions undermined a program that vulnerable New Yorkers depend on for basic nutrition. These charges should be a reminder that those who exploit anti-poverty programs for personal gain will be held accountable for their crimes.”
If convicted, these culinary con artists face decades behind bars. Perhaps they’ll have time to reflect on their choices over a lovely prison meal!
