Scarlett Johansson Roasts By Director in Jurassic World

For quite a while now, it’s been evident that Scarlett Johansson has wanted to be a part of the Jurassic World series for some time. She’s openly discussed her attempts to secure a role from Steven Spielberg, and with the promotional activities ramping up for the 2025 film, it seems she’s very enthusiastic about this project. During CinemaCon 2025 (which TopMob live-blogged), Johansson joined Director Gareth Edwards and co-star Mahershala Ali on stage, and her attire – khakis and heels – seemed to pay homage to Bryce Dallas Howard. However, the most entertaining moment was when Edwards playfully teased Johansson about her high fees for signing on.

If you haven’t seen Johansson’s Jurassic World-inspired outfit in khakis yet, it was a single-toned and chic look. To me, it seemed like an homage to what one might wear while venturing into the jungle, as well as a tribute to Bryce Dallas Howard’s monochromatic style in the last Jurassic World trilogy. It had elements of both exploration and elegance, but was undeniably striking.

Discussing endlessly if it’s suitable to run in high heels during a dinosaur chase scene –a question Bryce Dallas Howard has often been posed– is one thing. However, I believe high heels can be perfectly acceptable on the CinemaCon stage, regardless of whether they were meant as a nod to the series or not. In contrast, it appears that the creators of Rebirth genuinely enjoyed their collaborative process.

Scarlett Johansson had shared beforehand that she was eager to join the Jurassic Park series, but director Gareth Edwards playfully teased her during their interaction, which turned out to be one of my personal highlights from the event.

Laughingly predicting that she’d contact the team as soon as another Jurassic Park sequel was announced, Johansson mused for a while that perhaps a partnership between herself and dinosaurs “wasn’t destined to occur.” The director playfully countered, jokingly suggesting the reason it took so long for her to join was:

She’s too expensive.

Johansson brushed off the director’s subtle jab, instead choosing to share the genuine details. It turns out that this instance, she opted to approach Steven Spielberg personally. She confided that she was prepared to meet an early demise in the film, as she put it, “I might even be consumed within the first five minutes.” To this, Edwards responded with a spoiler alert.

It’s clear he’s just kidding about the actress dying within the first five minutes in “Jurassic World: Rebirth,” since I’ve already seen the trailer and she’s undeniably involved in crucial scenes. However, it would be intriguing to see some shocking deaths from well-known actors in this series, which could introduce an element of surprise into a franchise that’s been around for a while.

Despite the absence of Jonathan Bailey who’s busy with filming, it was delightful seeing the camaraderie among the three key cast members. Additionally, I am eagerly anticipating more glimpses of Scarlett Johansson as we approach the release date on July 2, 2025. Here’s hoping the friendly exchanges continue!
