Was Avengers: Endgame snubbed at the 2020 Oscars? Scarlett Johansson thinks so.
In the June issue of Vanity Fair, published on Wednesday, the director of Eleanor the Great shared thoughts about her time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, focusing particularly on her final involvement with the franchise in 2019’s Endgame. The film marked the demise of her character, Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow), and she continues to feel that the Academy overlooked the movie.
The actress from Black Widow expressed surprise that Endgame wasn’t nominated for an Oscar in the Best Picture category, stating, ‘This movie seemed unlikely to succeed, yet it turned out to be a fantastic film.’
2020’s Academy Awards saw Endgame receive a nomination for outstanding achievement in visual effects, preventing it from going entirely unrecognized.
She also mentioned that it’s among the most financially successful movies ever made, citing the 2019 Marvel Cinematic Universe film which ranks as the second highest grossing movie of all time, bringing in approximately $2.79 billion. However, it trails slightly behind Avatar as the top-grossing movie of all time with $2.92 billion, although Endgame had surpassed Avatar in the rankings back in July 2019.
In her profile, Johansson explained that it would be challenging for her to comprehend how playing Natasha/Black Widow again could fit, as the character’s storyline in Endgame has concluded and she isn’t interested in altering it.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but yearn for the company of my cherished characters, and I must admit, I dream of being with them forever. However, what makes this character so captivating is that her story has reached its satisfying conclusion. I wouldn’t want to tamper with that timeless narrative. It’s crucial for both me as a fan, and for the many others who have grown to love her story too.
In an interview with InStyle back in March, Johansson expressed her thoughts against reprising the role of Natasha in the MCU, stating that it’s time for fans to move on and accept that her character may not return.
“Natasha has passed away. She’s gone forever. She’s truly gone… OK?” she stated. “They simply can’t accept it. They keep saying, ‘But she might return!’ Listen, I believe the universe itself relies on her. We need to let go now. She was a savior. Let her have her heroic send-off.
As a diehard fan, I first encountered Scarlett Johansson in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with “Iron Man 2.” Quickly establishing herself as a staple in the franchise, she was one of the six original Avengers, shining brightest in the blockbuster hit “The Avengers” in 2012. Although Natasha Romanoff met her end in “Endgame,” Johansson graced our screens once again to star in the 2021 prequel film, “Black Widow.” This film offered valuable insights into her character’s past and introduced us to future stars like Florence Pugh and David Harbour who are part of the upcoming “Thunderbolts” ensemble.
