As a movie reviewer who grew up in the golden age of parody comedy films, I couldn’t help but feel a wave of nostalgia when I heard that the Wayans brothers are returning to the Scary Movie franchise with a sixth installment. Having spent countless hours laughing at their clever spoofs and witty humor, it feels like coming home to an old friend.
The 2000s represented the peak era for parody comedy films, as spoofs targeting various genres made humorous jabs at every cliché imaginable. Maybe America sought an absurd diversion amidst the Bush administration’s high point. Without a doubt, the reigning kings of the parody genre were none other than the Wayans brothers, who kicked off this trend with their initial release of Scary Movie in 2000. Recently, these brothers have announced plans to revisit the Scary Movie franchise with the sixth installment, having last worked on the series following Scary Movie 2. It was announced in October this year that the trio will be rejoining the Scary Movie series. Marlon Wayans shared on Instagram a photo featuring a grinning Ghostface, which now boasts over 1.2 million likes. Subsequently, the Wayans brothers confirmed their enthusiasm for getting back to their comedy franchise to Deadline. This franchise, spanning five films, has accumulated close to a billion dollars in earnings.

This is a series we initiated over two decades ago, and we can’t wait to hear audiences laughing in the cinemas just like before. We’re eager to collaborate with Jonathan Glickman and his Miramax team to bring those laughs back to where they truly belong – in movie theaters. This is essentially a double reunion for us!
The Parody Film Cycle Continues…
The phenomenon of the parody movie is nothing new to this millennium. Airplane (still one of the best to ever do it) was in reaction to a series of airplane disaster films of the era including Zero Hour and Airport 1975. Similarly, the original Scary Movie was in reaction to the cultural buildup of slasher films in the 90s – particularly Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer. One thing you can count on from modern parody films is their ability to freeze in amber the cultural movements around their release date.
Instead of just poking fun at the genres they’re spoofing, they often cram every joke with numerous pop culture references, even going as far as to seize on any reference available in each overstuffed scene. For instance, the first Scary Movie even includes a “bullet time” gag from The Matrix. This is beneficial because it allows movies like these to parody well-established tropes with minimal effort when the culture is heavily saturated with them. It’s hard to predict what subjects Scary Movie 6 might mock, but given their history, franchises like Smile and Megan could be likely targets.
Joining us on this project is writer Rick Alvarez, known for penning other films with Marlon Wayans like “Fifty Shades of Black”, “Sextuplets”, and “Naked”. Meanwhile, Marlon Wayans is slated to appear in the upcoming sports thriller “HIM” directed by Justin Tipping, under Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions. The release date for this film is scheduled for September 2025.
