As a long-time fan of Neill Blomkamp’s work, especially his groundbreaking debut “District 9,” I find myself eagerly anticipating his future projects with bated breath. Having grown up watching the evolution of science fiction cinema, I have seen the genre grapple with socio-political issues in innovative ways, and Blomkamp’s unique blend of action, humor, and thoughtful commentary has always resonated deeply with me.
In this month, you can stream for free the controversial science fiction action film by director Neill Blomkamp, titled “Elysium“. This was his second feature film after the critically acclaimed movie, “District 9“. The lead role in “Elysium” is played by and the story unfolds on a degraded and overcrowded Earth where most people dream of going to the opulent space habitat called “Elysium”. After an accident that leaves him needing assistance, he gains access to a powerful (and visually impressive) exoskeleton which could give him the opportunity to visit Elysium. It might be worth revisiting this film as it’s been some time since its release.
As a passionate fan of sci-fi and action, I’m thrilled to share that starting October 25, you can stream the underrated gem, “Elysium,” for free! This movie has been unfairly criticized since its release over a decade ago, but trust me when I say it’s worth your time. Although it might not reach the heights set by Neill Blomkamp’s earlier masterpiece, “District 9,” “Elysium” is still rich in thought-provoking ideas and stunning visuals. Like its predecessor, this movie delves into complex socio-political themes within a science fiction context. Don’t miss the chance to see it for yourself!
Regrettably, it wasn’t only critics and viewers who felt that Blomkamp stumbled with Elysium. In fact, the filmmaker himself has openly shared (through Uproxx) his own dissatisfaction with certain aspects of the movie, admitting he made a few mistakes by saying he “messed up a little bit”.
In simpler terms, the original story I created didn’t quite work out as planned. However, the concept of a ring inhabited by wealthy individuals floating above a poverty-stricken Earth is still a fantastic idea that I am deeply passionate about. I almost wish to revisit and improve it. The reality is, I believe the movie itself fell short, not because of poor execution in areas like costume design, set design, or special effects, but because the script wasn’t strong enough; the story wasn’t fully developed. Even though I executed the individual components well, the overall structure, or the “skeletal system” as you might say, was not solid, which is why the script and ultimately the story didn’t reach its full potential.
Will Neill Blomkamp Ever Make District 10?
Gained widespread recognition following the release of the critically-acclaimed science fiction film District 9 in 2009, sparking anticipation for a follow-up titled District 10 ever since. Fans have been eagerly awaiting its arrival, with the director yet to fully recapture the success of his debut feature. The duo behind District 9, Neill Blomkamp and Sharlto Copley, have consistently hinted at the sequel’s imminent release over the past few years, with Copley expressing hope for production to commence within the next two years – though he did mention that could be as late as 2022.
“Neill needs to stop deceiving the public, as his dishonesty is causing problems. Essentially, if he promises something, he should follow through. The reason for the delay seems to be connected to societal and political events that he finds troubling. He wants to coordinate things carefully so it appears well-timed. This means we might have to wait another two years. However, considering it’s been around 12 years already, waiting an additional two isn’t much of a delay. Fingers crossed, we’ll start filming in about two years.
As a passionate cinephile, I can tell you that Neill Blomkamp himself has shared that whether District 10 will come to life again hinges on the performance of his latest creation, Gran Turismo. This movie raked in an impressive $122 million globally against its production budget of just $60 million and currently boasts a solid 65% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, it truly shines with a remarkable 98% approval on the Popcornmeter!
