In simple terms, Scott Derrickson’s latest movie, “The Gorge,” has swiftly reached the number one spot on Apple TV+’s streaming charts following its release on the service a day ago. This Apple original production, featuring Anya Taylor-Joy and Miles Teller, made an impressive debut, demonstrating how Apple’s original content continues to remain relevant and distinctive amidst a sea of offerings on streaming platforms, including numerous original films and series. Released on February 15, “The Gorge” garnered attention due to its star-studded cast, intriguing director, captivating plotline, and unique blend of genres.
As a movie enthusiast, I’d describe my experience with “The Gorge” like this: In a bleak future, I find myself drawn to the story of Levi (Teller) and Drasa (Taylor-Joy), two snipers stationed on opposite watchtowers overlooking a treacherous gorge. We’re not sure what we’re guarding against, but as these characters grow closer while being kept apart, I can’t help but feel the tension between them.
But then, their bond begins to unravel secrets about the gorge that change everything! Suddenly, it’s no longer a romance story, but a thrilling sci-fi action adventure. With its unique blend of genres – sci-fi, drama, and romance – director Derrickson and writer Zach Dean have created an intriguing new world for me to explore.
Known primarily for directing movies like Sinister, Doctor Strange, and most recently The Black Phone (horror film) and a segment in the horror anthology V/H/S/85, Derrickson has ventured into new territory with his latest project. This fresh departure from his usual genres and narrative style likely played a significant role in the film’s success as a streaming hit on Apple TV+.
‘The Gorge’ is Proof of the Large Investments Put Into Apple TV+
Due to the rising popularity of “The Gorge” on streaming platforms, Apple TV+ has solidified its position as a dominant force in the streaming battlefield. While competitors such as Max, Hulu, and Paramount+ produce an equal amount of original content, Apple has distinguished itself over the past few years with shows like “Ted Lasso,” known for its endearing cast and heartwarming narrative, and more recently with films such as Steve McQueen’s “Blitz” or the latest season of “Severance.” The marketing strategy and weekly release format for these productions have also sparked anticipation for the second season.
Apple TV+ houses the Best Picture winner of the 2022 Academy Awards, “Coda,” further cementing its reputation for creating top-tier films. Although “The Gorge” hasn’t garnered as much acclaim as some other productions (with a rating of 61% on Rotten Tomatoes), it is generally appreciated as a skillfully made movie, with its genre-blending elements making it an interesting watch on the streaming platform.
Time will reveal if “The Gorge” maintains its appeal, as freshly released streaming content often doesn’t remain at the top of the charts for long, particularly with the constant influx of new releases each week. However, Scott Derrickson’s latest movie has garnered a positive response from viewers. Excitingly, Derrickson has hinted that his next project will be “The Black Phone 2”, following the completion of “The Gorge”.
