Scott Foley’s Confusion About Scream 7: What Does It Mean for Fans?

Currently, horror enthusiasts are in for a treat since the resurgence of the horror genre has brought back some outstanding horror movies on the big screen through new sequels. For instance, Wes Craven’s iconic franchise, Scream, has recently released two sequels and is now available to stream with a Paramount+ subscription. Intriguingly, a seventh installment is underway, featuring multiple deceased Ghostface killers. Interestingly enough, even Scott Foley appears to be uncertain about his character Roman’s return in the upcoming movie.

Information about Scream 7 is scarce, but fans are thrilled that Neve Campbell will reprise her role as Sidney Prescott. The details about how Roman will feature in the film are yet to be revealed, although it’s worth noting that Billy Loomis appeared as a ghost in the last two movies. Recently, on Good Morning America (through Entertainment Weekly), Foley expressed his own uncertainty about returning for the first time since Scream 3. In his own words: “I’m just as puzzled as everyone else about my role in Scream 7.

I’d appreciate if someone could enlighten me on the process, as I’m not familiar with how this works.

To be frank, I feel the same way. It’s exciting to see characters from the Scream series resurface, but I thought only the living characters would return for the seventh film. Surprisingly, Skeet Ulrich and Scott Foley are set to reappear in their roles despite seemingly meeting their ends. In a recent interview, the actor from Scandal also revealed details about his character’s destiny in Scream 3 (which can be streamed with a Max subscription). To quote him directly:

25 years ago, I found myself portraying the villain in Scream 3, a character who met a gruesome end. Now, here I am reprising my role in Scream 7, and I must admit, I’m left pondering the intricacies of this return.

Although the third film in the slasher series might be considered less violent compared to others, Foley’s remarks are likely to resonate with fans due to a common pattern: The Ghostface killers’ fates are usually conclusive – they are typically killed by gunshots to the head at the end of each movie.

Regarding how the deceased characters will feature in “Scream 7”, it appears that director Kevin Williamson (the writer of the initial two films) is likely to emphasize the franchise’s past heavily. Scott Foley discussed his experience reconnecting with Williamson, along with his co-stars, as he put it:

It was an absolute blast! I got to reunite with Neve, David Arquette, and Kevin Williamson, who penned the original script. Interestingly, Kevin directed this project, and it was a delight working alongside him again on set. It was wonderful being surrounded by familiar faces I cherish.

Fanatics were disheartened when David Arquette’s character Dewey met his demise in the 2022 “Scream”, leading to much anticipation for his appearance in “Scream 7”. Instead of deceased characters being resurrected, fans speculate that they could show up alongside Neve Campbell’s Sidney. Given her extensive background with trauma and the recurring danger she faces battling Ghostface, it seems plausible that she might encounter these characters again.

At this moment, we’re left in suspense about all the queries regarding Scream 7, as it’s not slated for release until February 27, 2026, which means it won’t be part of the 2025 cinema schedule. We’ll simply have to stay patient for more updates about Scott Foley’s Roman and the other deceased characters in the film.
