The creator of “Dawson’s Creek” and the screenwriter for Wes Craven’s initial “Scream” movies will be at the helm for directing “Scream 7“. According to Williamson’s social media updates, we now have an official title, release date, and confirmation that filming has commenced. The director recently shared a sneak peek behind the scenes.
In the 1990s, Kevin Williamson, renowned for penning the films like “Scream“, “Scream 2“, “Scream 4“, and other horror movies such as “I Know What You Did Last Summer” and “The Faculty“, is making a comeback to the franchise that catapulted him to fame. Despite his one directorial venture, “Teaching Mrs. Tingle“, a dark teen comedy thriller from 1999, being relatively overlooked, Williamson appears eager to take on the challenging project of “Scream 7“. Filming has already commenced, and he marked his return with an Instagram post displaying his name on a beautiful slate. The caption reads: “[His name] is back in business.
I’m usually not allowed to talk about Scream, but I just can’t contain my excitement after having one of the best days ever! Working with an incredible cast and crew who were nothing short of amazing and talented. They gave their all and supported me throughout the entire process. I’m incredibly thankful for this experience and I feel so grateful to have had this opportunity. Throughout it all, I couldn’t help but think about Wes Craven, whose influence on my life and career is immeasurable. I can hardly wait for tomorrow! #scream7
‘Scream 7’: Going Back to Basics or a Desperate Move?
The upcoming movie titled “Scream 7” is set to hit theaters on February 27, 2026 – marking nearly three years since Ghostface last graced our cinemas, causing chaos in New York City. This release date was recently confirmed by none other than William and Neve Campbell via Instagram. Joining the cast for the seventh “Scream” film is Prescott, but it remains unclear who else from the original “Scream” cast might make a reappearance. While Courteney Cox seems like a strong contender, her involvement in the new movie is yet to be officially announced. Only Mason Gooding has been confirmed to return as Chad Meeks-Martin. Other actors participating include Isabel May, Mckenna Grace, Anna Camp, and Celeste O’Connor. The “Scream” franchise is poised for a major transformation with these fresh faces on board.
It’s no accident that Kevin Williams is in the director’s chair and Neve Campbell is rejoining the Scream franchise after her absence in Scream VI. This move by Spyglass Media Group may be an effort to bring the franchise back to its original essence. However, some observers see it as a last-ditch attempt to revive the slasher series amidst the turmoil behind the scenes when the reboot’s lead actress, Melissa Barrera, was let go and Jenna Ortega chose to depart from the franchise.
Regardless of who the main characters were, there was always going to be a seventh Scream movie. Spyglass’ decision to split with Barrera and Ortega simply opened up opportunities for new character narratives. While Sam and Tara Carpenter have joined the Scream universe, it remains unclear if they are crucial to the franchise’s long-term plans. We’ll find out in 2026 when Scream 7 hits theaters in that year.
