Scream 7 Officially Sets 2026 Release Date

As a lifelong horror enthusiast and connoisseur of the Scream franchise, I must say that the news about Scream VII has been nothing short of a rollercoaster ride – a thrilling, terrifying, exhilarating, and at times, infuriating experience.

Many people view October 1st as marking the beginning of the eerie period often called “spooky season”. With that in mind, it’s particularly exciting for horror enthusiasts when significant updates surface about one of the genre’s major franchises. The announcement for Scream VII was made some time ago, but there was uncertainty regarding when Ghostface would terrorize audiences again. As it turns out, it appears that Ghostface requires a little more time to hone its (or her) blade, as the movie is set to premiere later than most fans probably anticipated.

According to updates on social media from franchise lead Neve Campbell and creator Kevin Williamson, the seventh installment of Scream is scheduled for release in theaters on February 27, 2026. This may disappoint those expecting an earlier filming start for a 2025 release, but it’s reassuring to know that the creators are not rushing the project for immediate profits. Instead, they seem dedicated to ensuring they craft an effective story, giving them ample time to do so. You can find Campbell’s excited post below where she hints, “It’s going to be a killer 2026!

Developing Scream VII Has Been Killer

The journey towards Scream VII has been challenging due to a sequence of unfortunate incidents. Following the record-breaking debut of Scream VI in 2023, earning $44.4 million domestically and $166.3 million globally, the production of the seventh film was swiftly approved. However, everything changed when Melissa Barrera, who starred as Sam Carpenter in both 2022’s Scream and the sixth installment, was let go by Spyglass Media Group due to posts they perceived as promoting antisemitism concerning the conflict in Gaza. Fans of the franchise rallied behind Barrera, expressing their belief that her termination was unwarranted and unnecessary.

A day after Barrera’s dismissal became known, Jenna Ortega, renowned for portraying Tara Carpenter in the mentioned Scream series, declared she wouldn’t reprise her role for the seventh part. This was due to scheduling issues with the second season of Netflix’s Wednesday, where Ortega has gained significant recognition. With her outstanding performance in the 2022 film, many industry experts attribute a substantial contribution to the impressive box office success of the sixth film. However, an additional report hinted at a disagreement over financial matters between Ortega and Spyglass Media Group as the underlying reason for her departure.

Amidst these developments, directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett stepped away from the Scream franchise, with Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon taking their place initially. However, after news of Barrera’s dismissal broke and Ortega left the project, Landon announced he wouldn’t be directing the sequel. The reason for Landon’s departure wasn’t explicitly stated, but in a social media post, he expressed that his dream of directing a Scream movie turned into a living nightmare due to the turmoil behind the scenes.

After the chaos subsided, Campbell revealed she was rejoining the Scream series, having skipped the sixth movie due to a payment disagreement with Spyglass (it seems there’s a pattern emerging). Taking to her Instagram, Campbell shared that the seventh film would see the return of Williamson, the franchise creator from 1996, as director. This news was met with delight by fans of Campbell’s character, Sidney Prescott, but some also saw it as a snub towards Barrera, who they felt shouldn’t have been replaced in the first place.

The recent release date news comes after Courteney Cox, who has played Gale Weathers in every Scream installment, revealed that she has not officially signed on for Scream VII. She did indicate she was in the know about the project, and it should be noted that her response regarding the sequel felt more like a typical Hollywood non-answer. She’s more than likely to return but hasn’t finalized her deal. There have also been reports that Patrick Dempsey is expected to be on board as Mark Kincaid, a role he originated in Scream 3.
