Scream Debuts on Netflix and Immediately Hits the Charts

As a long-time horror enthusiast who’s seen my fair share of slasher flicks and survived countless jump scares, I must say that the latest addition to the Scream franchise has truly lived up to its reputation. The 2022 release, Scream, has been an absolute treat for fans old and new.

It’s no wonder that newly released Netflix titles often shoot up to the top of the rankings, and this pattern holds true even for classic films that have garnered a devoted following over the years. The latest installment in the “Scream” horror franchise, titled simply “Scream“, premiered just in time for Halloween and has been steadily climbing the charts since then. This 2022 version of “Scream”, the fifth film in the series, features an ensemble cast led by Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega, alongside Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, and David Arquette.

Approaching Halloween, it seems unlikely that “Scream” will fall off the top 10 list beforehand. If you are new to this franchise, be aware that this isn’t the first installment despite its title. This “Scream” contains many references to what preceded it, such as unveiling the original movie’s killer. While you can follow along fairly well without prior knowledge, watching the earlier films will enhance your experience significantly.

2023 saw the release of “Scream VI”, a sequel to the original “Scream” film, with many of the original cast members returning, except for Neve Campbell, who was unable to agree on contract terms. However, Campbell is set to return as Sidney Prescott in the upcoming “Scream 7”, which is being helmed by the original “Scream” screenwriter, Kevin Williamson.

What Does the Future of Scream Look Like?

Even though Sidney Prescott, portrayed by Campbell in Scream VI, was noticeably absent from the film, she was still mentioned, leaving room for potential future appearances. In a surprise move that left fans stunned, Campbell confirmed her return in an Instagram post in March 2024.

“Sidney Prescott is coming back!!!! It’s always been such a blast and an honor to get to play Sidney in the ‘Scream’ movies. My appreciation for these films and for what they have meant to me, has never waned. I’m very happy and proud to say I’ve been asked, in the most respectful way, to bring Sidney back to the screen and I couldn’t be more thrilled!!! Well actually I could. While I’ve been so incredibly lucky to make these films with both the master of horror Wes Craven and the wonderfully talented Matt and Tyler team, I’ve dreamt for many years of how amazing it would be to make one of these movies with Kevin Williamson at the helm. And now it’s happening, Kevin Williamson is going to direct ‘Scream 7‘!”

In a shift of directors, Williamson stepped in for Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, better known as Radio Silence, who directed ‘Scream’ and ‘Scream VI’. The details of the plot remain secret, leaving fans eagerly waiting for more information. Currently, it appears that the narrative involving the Carpenter sisters, played by Ortega and Barrera, may be paused temporarily. Depending on the writers’ future plans for these characters, there is a possibility they might resume their stories later on. Cox has not yet signed up for the sequel, but it seems hard to imagine a ‘Scream’ film without her involvement.
