As a die-hard fan of the Scream franchise, I can’t help but feel a tinge of empathy for Mikey Madison. The poor girl was just doing her job, bringing Amber to life in all her Ghostface glory, but little did she know that she would become public enemy number one among Scream fans.
Fans of horror movies have been fortunate recently, as the genre is experiencing a resurgence, with many classic fright flicks returning for new sequels. One such film is “Scream,” which has spawned two more installments (available for streaming with a Paramount+ subscription). Mikey Madison, who played Amber in the 2022 release, shared that fans frequently approach her with the same constructive feedback.
Our knowledge about the upcoming movie “Scream 7” is still scant, thus fans are presently scrutinizing the latest episodes while eagerly anticipating its release. In the 2022 version of “Scream”, Mikey Madison portrayed Ghostface and delivered an outstanding performance as the Woodsboro inhabitant turned murderer. Her character Amber fatally stabbed Dewey midway through the movie, causing distress among long-term fans. Recently, in a chat with Variety, the actress from “Anora” discussed the fan reaction to the slasher film since its release, explaining:
In retrospect, I felt quite melancholic upon learning that a beloved character was leaving. It was as if I’d lost a friend. Later on, I came to understand the depth of sorrow shared by many others. Fans have approached me, expressing their disappointment and even anger. Yet, I must clarify, I had no hand in writing the script! I didn’t want this change to occur; it was beyond my control.
Poor Madison. It appears that she made a valid observation, as she wasn’t the one who decided to eliminate one of Scream’s primary characters. The writers were responsible for that decision; her role was merely to portray Amber to the best of her abilities. However, it seems like she discovered, perhaps unwittingly, just how deeply the audience admired Dewey.
Following Dewey’s demise, it was expected that David Arquette would be absent from Scream 7, a film that also did not feature Neve Campbell’s character Sidney Prescott. This left only Gale Weather from the original trilogy to appear, although new characters like Kirby Reed have emerged in the Scream universe. In a later part of her interview, Mikey Madison discussed very little about the Scream lore prior to being cast as Ghostface.
Initially, I must confess that during the production of the film, I was unaware of the massive fan base that the franchise boasts – a fact I’ve come to realize only afterward. Fans of Scream and horror movies in general are truly remarkable individuals, but I admit, my lack of foresight led me into the project somewhat innocently.
In the 2022 film Scream, Amber took on the majority of the killing as Ghostface, making her a remarkably deadly character. However, Dewey’s demise was particularly heartbreaking for viewers, and it seems that they are keeping actor Mikey Madison in mind about this emotional moment.
In contrast to Scream VI, the sixth installment in the franchise, Neve Campbell has confirmed her return as Sidney in the upcoming seventh movie. This likely means that fans will find Dewey’s absence in future developments more manageable. We’ll keep our fingers crossed for further casting updates.
Right now, it’s planned that the film titled “Scream 7” will hit the big screens on February 27th, 2026. In the meantime, take a look at the movies scheduled for release in 2025.
