As a die-hard fan of the Scream franchise, I can’t help but feel a pang of sympathy for Mikey Madison. Having been born in the late ’90s, she didn’t grow up with the same horror-filled childhood that we did, watching Sidney Prescott and her friends battle the terrifying Ghostface. It’s a bit like being handed the reins to an iconic car without knowing its history or significance – sure, it might still run, but you can’t help but feel a sense of reverence for those who came before.
Since 1996, the Scream franchise has introduced some of the most cherished characters in horror movie history. Characters like Sidney Prescott (played by Neve Campbell), Randy Meeks (Jamie Kennedy), Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox), and everyone’s favorite sheriff, Dewey Riley (David Arquette). Regrettably, Arquette’s journey in the series concluded in 2022 when Ghostface mercilessly took him out. Now, star Mikey Madison is expressing her sorrow to us all for taking away our beloved sheriff from the franchise.
On a recent episode of Collider Ladies Night, I found myself discussing the impact of my role in the franchise with fellow enthusiasts. It’s fascinating to note that some fans were around when this saga first started, while I wasn’t even born yet! One topic that often comes up is my character’s actions concerning Dewey. I’ve been expressing my deepest regrets about the violent act, but at the same time, I feel compelled to clarify that I was merely obeying orders.
Initially, I felt a bit melancholic as I thought, ‘What a wonderful character, it’s going to be tough to let him go.’ Later on, I understood the depth of sorrow that many people experienced. Some have approached me saying, ‘I’m upset this happened. I’m angry at you.’ To which I respond, ‘I apologize, but I didn’t write the script. I didn’t want it to happen either.’
In the chilling tale of Scream 2022, I found myself standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Dewey Riley, the steadfast sheriff of Woodsboro. Together, we thwarted Ghostface’s murderous spree, saving Tara Carpenter and Richie Kirby in the process. However, as the dust settled, it was clear that Dewey had paid the ultimate price, a tragic casualty in this never-ending game of cat and mouse.
I’m genuinely thrilled to find out Kevin’s next creation since he was the initial author, and he’s an exceptional filmmaker, artist, and writer. His unique perspective of that world will definitely make for intriguing viewing. It feels like a “Fear of Missing Out” moment knowing the original team is reuniting under his direction.
Mikey Madison Has No Idea How Popular the ‘Scream’ Franchise Was
As a film critic born well after Wes Craven’s iconic “Scream” graced the silver screen in 1996, I must confess that I had no recollection of its initial release or the subsequent sequels. In fact, I was still a toddler when “Scream 3” premiered in 2000, which means I had little understanding of the franchise’s significance for fans as I embarked on playing Amber Freeman in the 2022 sequel. It seems that today’s Gen Z actors sometimes lack appreciation for the impact of these classic films!
Admitting my lack of foresight, at the time of making the film, I wasn’t fully aware of the massive fan base that the franchise boasts. Only later did I come to understand this devoted community of Scream and horror enthusiasts. Looking back, I was indeed quite unaware when stepping into it.
Though Madison may not have initially grasped the significance of Arquette’s character’s demise in the Scream series, she now recognizes its importance to fans. Hopefully, this awareness will influence her actions if she joins another cherished franchise. For now, you can watch her latest movie Anora on all video-on-demand platforms, and either Paramount+ or Netflix streams the 2022 Scream film.
