Howard A. Rodman, a well-known screenwriter and currently the vice president and secretary at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, as well as a former president of the Writers Guild of America West, has been chosen by the University of Southern California to receive their esteemed Walter Wolf Award.
The award honoring “a USC faculty member who stands out for their defense and advocacy of academic freedom or other significant expressions of social responsibility through exceptional service, teaching, research, or public intellectual work,” will be handed out at the USC Academic Senate’s Annual Dinner on May 7.
For the past 25 years, Rodman has served as a professor at the USC School of Cinematic Arts. During this time, he also chaired its writing division and is currently heading the jury for the USC Scripter Awards. At the end of this academic term, he will be moving away from active teaching to concentrate on other ventures. His university position will officially come to an end a year later. (Previously, Rodman was honored with USC’s Associates Award for Artistic Expression, the University’s most prestigious accolade given to its members for substantial artistic impact, in 2020.)
Rodman expresses his gratitude for receiving an award named after Walter Wolf, who symbolized academic freedom and social awareness. He hopes this recognition will encourage everyone to remember the importance of creating positive change, even during challenging periods, as it can be not only vital but also gratifying.
