‘Scrubs’ Creator Confirms Reboot Won’t Retcon Controversial Season 9

As a seasoned cinephile with memories of laughter and tears etched into my soul by the iconic series “Scrubs,” I must confess that the news of its revival has stirred a whirlwind of emotions within me. The ninth season, though controversial, was a bold experiment that showcased fresh talent like Kerry Bishé, Michael Mosley, and Dave Franco, who have all proven their mettle in the industry since then.

The creator of Scrubs, Bill Lawrence, is reviving the popular medical comedy 15 years after its initial run, which ended on a less-than-favorable note with its final season. Instead of rewriting the events of the ninth season, as some might have hoped, Lawrence intends to maintain the controversial storylines that focused on a fresh set of characters in a new setting – an approach that didn’t sit well with many Scrubs fans. Although most of the original cast members made guest appearances in Season 9, Donald Faison and John C. McGinley were the only ones who returned in recurring roles, a daring decision considering the show’s beloved original cast… yet it ultimately led to Scrubs being canceled following its ninth season.

But, despite all that, Lawrence says there is room for Scrubs‘ talented final season cast in the upcoming revival. During a conversation with TVLine, Lawrence defended his stance, saying, “I thought some of those actors and actresses were really starting to find their footing. Kerry Bishé, [Michael] Mosley, Dave Franco… they’re all still working for a reason. They’re all very good.” He continued:

Although I wouldn’t mind running into those individuals once more and it would certainly add excitement to have one of them pass by, let me clarify: the spin-off we had planned was intended to revolve around a medical school. The students in this setting would eventually become doctors and practice medicine all over the world. Instead, I envision our future series will center around a hospital where some of our familiar characters continue their medical careers. This raises the question, who are the new interns or residents at that hospital?

Alongside Bishé, Franco, Mosley, and newcomer Eliza Coupe, the series’ ninth season was spearheaded by Coupe when she joined the cast during the eighth season. Previously, the dramedy centered around the lives of interns and residents at the fictional Sacred Heart Hospital, with a main focus on Doctor John “J.D.” Dorian (Zach Braff), as he dealt with both his professional and personal struggles. In the revival, as shared by Lawrence, the spotlight is once again on J.D., inspired by a dream that Braff’s character had during the Season 8 finale.

I wonder if J.D.’s dreams all really did come true. That, to us, is interesting.

Scrubs Is Back!

As a dedicated fan of television series, I’ve eagerly followed the speculation about the potential revival of the iconic show, Scrubs. Airing on NBC from 2001 to 2008, and then moving to ABC for its final seasons (2009-2010), this medical comedy-drama was a staple in my viewing schedule. The series featured the talented Zach Braff, Donald Faison, Sarah Chalke, Judy Reyes, Ken Jenkins, John C. McGinley, and Neil Flynn.

In October, Braff stated that Lawrence’s packed schedule, due to his involvement in Apple TV+’s popular dramedy “Shrinking” and the development of “Bad Monkey” starring Vince Vaughn for the streamer, had caused a delay in the revival. Additionally, there were negotiations regarding Lawrence’s overall deal with Warner Bros. Television, but it appears these have now been resolved (possibly because Lawrence won’t be serving as “Scrubs” showrunner if the reboot moves forward as a series). Excitedly, we look forward to catching up on J.D. and Turk’s friendship! Until then, enjoy streaming “Scrubs” on Peacock here or access it through Hulu via the link provided below:
