As a movie enthusiast with a penchant for reminiscing the golden era of television, I must admit that the news about Matthew Fox’s latest role as the lead in The Assassin has me thoroughly excited! Having grown up watching Fox’s iconic portrayal of Jack Shepherd on Lost, it’s heartening to see him returning to the small screen after a brief hiatus.
As a dedicated film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that the renowned actor Matthew Fox, famously recognized as Jack Shepherd from the smash-hit ABC series Lost, has been selected to headline the lead role in The Assassin, an intense drama series on Max. According to Deadline, this series is adapted from the acclaimed book series by British author Tom Wood, and is being masterminded by John Glenn, a seasoned showrunner who’s previously worked on hit shows like SEAL Team and Allegiance. The book series in question, known as the Victor the Assassin series, kicked off in 2011 with The Killer, and now boasts a total of 11 novels, with a 12th set to be released in November.
The books tell the story of a world-class assassin known only as Victor (to be played by Fox in the series), who goes on the run when he is betrayed by an anonymous client. Not only is he being hunted by his enemies, the CIA and a contract killer are after him as well. While trying to stay alive and discover the identity of his betrayer, Victor begins to rediscover his own humanity, something he had long ago tried to bury. Described as a thriller mixed with elements of The Fugitive and John Wick,The Assassin is still in the development stage, and no additional casting or a timeframe for production has been announced.
Known primarily for his starring part on the show “Lost,” this actor gained fame. Developed by J.J. Abrams, Damon Lindelof, and Jeffrey Lieber, the series centers around a band of survivors stranded on a puzzling island following a plane crash. As they strive to return home, they uncover the island’s peculiar, almost supernatural traits. The show debuted in 2004 and lasted for six seasons and 121 episodes, earning 10 Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Drama Series in 2005.
In the television series “Lost”, Fox was not new to audiences as he had previously appeared on the drama “Party of Five” on Fox. However, the massive popularity that “Lost” achieved catapulted Fox into stardom. Moreover, Fox received several notable nominations: a Primetime Emmy nomination in 2010 and a Golden Globe nomination in 2006, both for Best Actor in a Drama TV Series. Additionally, he earned two People’s Choice Award nominations as well.
Matthew Fox’s Career After Lost
Following the conclusion of Lost in 2010, Matthew Fox faced challenges finding suitable roles. He took on an atypical part and played an assassin in the thriller Alex Cross in 2012, portraying “Picasso,” who engaged in intellectual sparring with Tyler Perry’s character, Cross. Regrettably, the film failed despite Fox’s commitment, but his subsequent film, the 2013 zombie movie World War Z, was a massive success. However, before its release, the Brad Pitt actioner underwent substantial rewrites and a complete reshoot of the third act, which reduced his significant role to a brief cameo. Plans for sequels that would have expanded his role were in place, but unfortunately, they never materialized.
In 2015, Fox appeared in the films “Extinction” and the contemporary western cannibal film “Bone Tomahawk”, which later became a cult classic. However, he took a seven-year break from acting following allegations of violence against a bus driver, which he firmly denied. Recently, he re-entered the acting world in 2022 with the Peacock series “Last Light”. Last year, he joined forces with Sean Penn, Susan Sarandon, and Travis Fimmel in the Australian comedy series “C*A*U*G*H*T”.
Currently, Lost can be streamed on Hulu. As of now, there’s no confirmed release date on Max for The Assassin.
