The beloved story of Robin Hood, a classic English folklore, is being retold once more in a live-action series. Notably, Sean Bean from “Lord of the Rings” and “Game of Thrones” has been cast as the notorious villain, the Sheriff of Nottingham. The new adaptation by MGM+ was announced last September, with “SEAL Team’s” John Glenn serving as the showrunner. Robin Hood is a timeless English folklore character, with tales dating back to 1377. Adaptations of this story have ranged from the gritty and intense (2010’s Robin Hood) to the comedic and fantastical (Robin Hood: Men in Tights). This latest version will return the character to his roots in Nottingham, with Sean Bean now joining the cast…
By the set deadline, it has been announced that Sean Bean will join MGM+’s Robin Hood series, taking on the role of the Sheriff of Nottingham. Previously, this character has been portrayed by several notable actors in various adaptations, including Ben Mendelsohn, Matthew Macfadyen, Robert Shaw, and Pat Buttram. However, perhaps the most renowned interpretation is Alan Rickman’s memorable performance in the film “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves,” which, despite being criticized by many, remains one of Rickman’s most cherished roles, alongside his portrayal of Professor Snape in the “Harry Potter” series.
As per the report, Sean Bean’s portrayal of the Sheriff of Nottingham is envisioned as a wise leader, a master strategist, and a constructive force in building Nottingham itself. Further details reveal him to be a caring father, a politically savvy individual, and a relative of King Henry II, skillfully maneuvering through the treacherous currents of power. This aligns with the earlier descriptions of MGM+’s fresh perspective on Robin Hood, as suggested by the official synopsis:
“In this new rendition, Sean Bean plays the Sheriff of Nottingham – a shrewd statesman, a cunning strategist, and a significant figure in King Henry II’s court. Balancing his responsibilities as a father and a politician, he navigates the complexities of power amidst the backdrop of Nottingham.
After the Norman conquest of England, Rob – who was the son of a Saxon forester – found himself falling in love with Marian, the daughter of a high-ranking Norman lord. They united their efforts to champion justice and independence. As Rob gained prominence as the head of an outlaw group resisting the authorities, Marian used her connections within the royal court to undermine corruption and strive for peace throughout the realm. Together, they aimed to curb royal malpractice and restore tranquility to the land.
Can MGM+’s ‘Rob Hood’ Series Finally Get the Story Right?
As a movie enthusiast, I must say that throughout the last hundred years, there have been numerous attempts to bring the timeless story of Robin Hood to life on the silver screen. However, not every interpretation has managed to hit the mark. Among them all, the 1938 classic, “The Adventures of Robin Hood,” is often hailed as the pinnacle, while films like the 1922 version, Disney’s 1973 animated take, and the 1976 film “Robin and Marian” have also been warmly embraced by fans.
Nonetheless, there have been several disappointing productions worth mentioning. The latest Robin Hood film adaptation from 2018, featuring Taron Egerton and directed by Otto Bathurst, received harsh criticism, with a low 14% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. On the other hand, MGM+’s upcoming series has garnered optimism. With a run of 10 episodes, showrunner John Glenn will have plenty of time to delve into character development, offering viewers a traditional battle between good and evil featuring Robin Hood versus the Sheriff of Nottingham. Nevertheless, some fans are already expressing worry due to the apparent modifications and adjustments to the story as described.
MGM+’s Robin Hood series hasn’t been given an official release date.
