Initially, rap icon Sean “Diddy” Combs was widely recognized by his fans as a dynamic entrepreneur in music and fashion, with a reputation for lavish events and large entourages. However, individuals who chose to stay anonymous due to fear of retaliation have claimed that they’ve viewed him as a dominating, potentially harmful figure within the darker side of hip hop since the 1990s.
That is, until Combs’ arrest on sex trafficking and racketeering charges in September 2024.
A new documentary series on Investigation Discovery titled “The Fall of Diddy” is based on accounts from Combs’ inner circle and those who seem to have survived, providing a range of accusations involving assault, abuse, and violent acts by the billionaire in the music and fashion industry. These allegations about aggressive behavior and unlawful actions towards Combs surface while he is incarcerated at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, waiting for his trial.
In an upcoming interview, Rodney ‘Lil Rod’ Jones, a past producer for Bad Boy Records, states, “There are many figures in the music industry similar to Puffy. By shedding light on Puffy, we’re essentially revealing others like him.” The series will air on Jan 27 and Jan 28 on ID, as well as streaming on Max and discovery+.
Jones alleged that Combs, during the making of The Love Album, sexually harassed him.
The four-episode documentary delves into the less publicized aspects of Combs’ life, suggesting that despite the glamorous media image he maintained, he often operated independently and was reportedly quick to resort to violence, even over trivial personal affronts, in order to obtain what he desired at his convenience.
Tim Patterson, an old friend of Combs, makes an appearance in “The Fall of Diddy” to suggest that Combs’ early drive to amass wealth as he climbed the ladder in hip hop, which included establishing Bad Boy Entertainment, was fueled in part by being bullied at age 10 by kids from the neighborhood.
Now, he was shaped by being bullied. He had a submissive demeanor that made it easy for others to take advantage of him, and that’s exactly what they did,” Patterson stated, an assertion that initially upset his mother, Janice Combs.
Facing a decision, I steeled myself. It was time to step up. ‘I’ll outdo you, I’ll exceed your achievements, I’ll be more victorious than you, so I can take the lead.’ I was prepared for success,” Patterson emphasized.
However, a 2023 lawsuit filed by his ex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura, along with a subsequent video, revealed the disparity between the public persona and brand cultivated by music and fashion mogul Comb, as it claimed years of alleged rape and abuse during their relationship.
The depiction in the ID series implies a history of mistreatment or potential mistreatment tracing back to Combs’ time at Howard University, long before his ascension as an emerging billionaire entrepreneur.
In the ID series, there’s a character who, back in 1988 at Howard University, recalled observing Combs from her dormitory window as he shouted for a young woman to step outside and then angrily struck a wall with his belt. “When she descended the stairs, looking afraid and unsure of what to do, he began assaulting her, striking her repeatedly with that belt, and she was submitting to it,” the young woman stated.
In the end, Combs departed, and the young woman trailed after him. Frequently, it seemed like Combs managed to avoid responsibility as his wealth and status increased, effectively dodging law enforcement. Danyel Smith, a former editor-in-chief of Vibe magazine, commented in a docuseries about Combs’ infamous white parties in the Hamptons, also accusing him of violent conduct towards her, stating that it was reminiscent of scenes from movies.
Reporter Mara S. Campo is featured in the documentary series, where she shares whispers about excessive partying allegedly happening at Combs’ events. “At the time, we even heard that there was a great deal of wild behavior,” she emphasized.
In public, Sean Combs’ extravagant events with famous attendees were frequently captured and documented by photographers. However, according to the ID series, there are claims that privately, Combs was involved in a string of rape and sexual assault incidents against multiple women.
One individual breaking their silence for the first time is Thalia Graves, who provides detailed accounts in a long-form interview within the docuseries, accusing Combs of drugging her drink and brutally assaulting her during the summer of 2001 inside his Bad Boy Records studio. She claims he subsequently intimidated her into staying quiet. In her own words, she recounted to the ID series that she was petrified and wanted to survive, fearing death.
Instead of seeking medical attention at the hospital or reporting the matter to the authorities, Graves opted to stay quiet following a call from Combs. He allegedly told her, “Just keep quiet,” and then ended the conversation. This is according to her statement.
In September 2024, Graves filed a lawsuit against Combs, alleging that she was informed a year prior by an ex-boyfriend about the claim that her alleged 2001 rape was videotaped for distribution. “Why would anyone record such a horrific act and then share it with others?” Graves pondered, expressing her anger.
The ID series offers a glimpse into the life of Ventura, who parted ways with Combs in 2018 following a decade of alleged abuse and violence. In a recorded interview, Roger Bonds, previously Combs’ bodyguard, recounted an incident from 2009 where Ventura was reportedly assaulted after a party on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles.
According to Bonds, I was standing outside when Cassie exited first, followed by Puff. He walked briskly, and then unexpectedly, I saw him strike her out of nowhere. A fight ensued immediately. I exclaimed, “Get inside the car! Are you insane?” To which he responded, “no, no, no,” and proceeded to kick her instead.
The ID series features additional accounts from Combs’ close associates suggesting that Ventura was part of “bizarre parties” in the past, during which it is alleged that drug use, instances of non-consenting sexual assault, and sex trafficking occurred.
Roger Bonds, who was a bodyguard for Combs between 2003 and 2012, shared in an ID series that he had witnessed some questionable activities. He mentioned instances where Cassie and Diddy would occasionally leave for a weekend to a hotel, and upon observing the elevator, he’d notice men disembarking.
The account The Fall of Diddy features a distressing clip from March 5, 2016, which CNN broadcasted, depicting Combs violently confronting Ventura in a Los Angeles hotel corridor. This altercation involved kicks, shoves, and dragging her by her sweatshirt before he hurled something at her.
During that period, Combs expressed his apologies for the assault on Ventura, as portrayed in the CNN video, acknowledging that some people felt he was trying to downplay the incident. However, Canadian model and actress Kat Pasion, known for roles in shows like Altered Carbon, The Flash and Nancy Drew, features in the ID series to support Ventura’s claims of the severe abuse and assaults she suffered, as detailed in her groundbreaking civil lawsuit.
Back in November 2018, Pasion reminisced about initially meeting up for a drink with Combs. “Things started off quite well,” she recounted about their budding relationship that eventually turned into romance, using the term ‘friendship’.
In 2021, Pasion claimed that Combs seemed under the influence of drugs and allegedly made an unwanted advance towards her, emerging from a bedroom bathroom. She expressed reluctance to delve into specifics but stated emphatically that it wasn’t consensual. “I don’t want to go into details,” she said, “but the person who emerged from that bathroom and woke me up was not someone I recognized.
Passion asserts that Combs contacted her two weeks following her departure from his residence with the intention of intimidating her, even suggesting he could arrange her deportation back to Canada. “This man is troubling,” she stated emphatically in a recorded interview. “He exploits his wealth and perceived influence, believing that these can patch up the atrocious actions he inflicts upon people because he thinks he’s all-powerful.
As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but reflect on the irony: “Karma sure has a wicked sense of humor, and it seems he’s not basking in the sun on the Amalfi Coast right now.” The climax of the ID series, in its final episode, shifted to the federal three-count indictment against Combs, levied for sex trafficking and racketeering. These charges, filed in September 2024, encompass allegations of kidnapping, arson, forced labor, and obstruction of justice. Today, Combs finds himself confined in a Brooklyn detention center, denied bail.
In the series, it was revealed that Bonds, a former bodyguard, expressed his viewpoint by saying, “For me, it’s all about power. The entire industry can’t continue to ignore these situations. There are many figures like Puffy in the music business, and if we expose Puffy, we are essentially exposing them.
Jourdan Cha’Taun, formerly Sean Combs’ personal chef from 2007 to 2010 and who has detailed instances of workplace harassment and abuse during his employment, recently speaks publicly for the first time. Encouraging others to follow suit, she urges them to overcome their fear and openly share their own experiences.
Cha’Taun stated, ‘We’ve been taught not to tattle, which allows violence and abuse to persist unchecked. I am no longer afraid. Let it be known from the highest peaks: these individuals do not possess the power you believe they do.’
Additionally, the docuseries features Natania Griffin, a survivor of the tragic 1999 nightclub shooting in New York City linked to Combs. “I still carry nine bullet fragments in my face and skull,” Griffin explained. “He (Combs) stole my tranquility. He stole my feeling of security.
Combs has denied all the allegations made against him.
In response to queries from The Fall of Diddy producers, his legal team asserted in the documentary series that “Mr. Combs trusts completely in the facts and the honesty of the judicial system. In court, the truth will triumph; the allegations against Mr. Combs are entirely fabricated.
