The second season finale of “The Last of Us” on HBO ended dramatically last night, but don’t assume Abby and Ellie’s tale is over. In fact, as per showrunner Craig Mazin, several characters who are currently believed to be deceased may still have their stories told, thanks to the show’s distinctive narrative structure.
Discussing the upcoming Season 3 of The Last of Us, creator Mazin previewed what’s in store when the series resumes on HBO. The last scene of Season 2 depicted Abby (played by Kaitlyn Dever) waking up in a WLF compound with the phrase “Seattle Day 1” displayed, suggesting that we may delve into her past experiences when the show returns, although it’s uncertain if this will be the entire season’s focus. Mazin hinted that some beloved characters will reappear as well, offering hope to fans.
Kaitlyn Dever, Bella Ramsey, Isabela Merced, and several other characters who appear to be deceased in the narrative are not done making appearances.
Could it be that Pedro Pascal may reprise his role as Joel in the upcoming narrative? Since Mazin mentioned that for those unfamiliar with the video games, the secondary story will be crucial to understanding Joel, Ellie, and all that has transpired so far.
Ellie and Abby Are Not Done “Growing” in ‘The Last of Us’
It’s undeniable that Season 2 of The Last of Us delved deeper into a more somber and grim tone, particularly for the character Ellie (Bella Ramsey). Throughout the season, she becomes consumed by revenge, and even after it concludes, she’s left to ponder if her actions were justified – especially considering the fate of Jesse (Young Mazino). However, this is only a hint of what lies ahead, as suggested by Mazin. He also mentioned that with the finale, he aimed to make viewers feel like they aren’t in their starting point but still haven’t reached their destination. Additionally, he stated:
“By the end, you will realize that you are not where you were, but you are not yet where you will eventually end up.
It seems clear that Ellie and Abby are experiencing difficulties, perhaps even ethical dilemmas. The confidence they once had is waning, as evidenced by Ellie’s current state, for she is grappling with the repercussions of her actions and the innocents she unintentionally harmed. It remains uncertain where these two characters will end up, but it is my hope that viewers perceive them as still in a state of transformation – be it growth or decline. Only time will tell.
Despite keeping quiet about significant storylines for Season 3 of “The Last of Us”, fans who have played the games can make educated guesses about what lies ahead.
