As a long-time Marvel fan, I am beyond excited about the upcoming “Thunderbolts*”. Having witnessed Sebastian Stan‘s journey as Bucky Barnes throughout the MCU, I can confidently say that his insights into the movie’s evolution are compelling. The fact that it went through multiple rewrites and found its best form is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the team behind the scenes.
Sebastian Stan, known for playing Bucky Barnes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since its inception with “Captain America: The First Avenger,” has participated in nine projects to date, including Disney+ exclusives like “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” and “What If…?” His next appearance will be in 2025’s “Thunderbolts,” which is the 36th Marvel movie in chronological order. Earlier this year, it was revealed that the script for the upcoming Marvel film underwent significant revisions. Although Stan has acknowledged these changes, he also shared his perspective on why they ultimately proved beneficial.
During Stan’s interview on “Happy Sad Confused” for discussing his 2024 films The Apprentice and A Different Man, host Josh Horowitz enquired if it could be accurately stated that there exists a significantly altered version of Thunderbolts which we may never get to see, to which the actor replied:
There were a few repetitions in the plan, but what we eventually settled on was much improved. Originally, we had a script before the break, and then we moved onto another one. I am completely convinced that we made the best possible choice. Working with Jake Schreier has been fantastic; he brought an entirely new feel to this film that seems to blend humor and reality perfectly. It’s both funny and genuine, striking the ideal balance between the two. I am thrilled about working with him, and it seems that the extra time we had for production was crucial in discovering this unique style, which wouldn’t have been possible if we started a year ago.
Initially, “Thunderbolts” (with an asterisk) was penned by Eric Pearson, who worked on “Thor: Ragnarok.” However, in March 2023, Lee Sung Jin, known for “Beef,” announced he was drafting a new version of the script. Later in February, after delays due to writers and actors strikes pushing back the planned June 2023 start date, it emerged that Joanna Calo from “The Bear” was reworking the “Thunderbolts*” screenplay. According to THR, earlier drafts centered around the main team embarking on a mission where they were expected to perish.
Sebastian Stan isn’t able to discuss specific plot details beyond what’s been revealed in the Thunderbolts trailer, but he feels confident that the version of the film they shot from late February to mid-June was the best one to proceed with. Although production delays affected many Hollywood projects, Stan thinks the hold-up on Thunderbolts was advantageous as it provided more time for the team to perfect the movie viewers will see in cinemas next year. Stan has also appreciated working with director Jake Schreier, praising him for striking an ideal balance for this Marvel production.
In addition to Sebastian Stan, actors such as Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Wyatt Russell, Hannah John-Kamen, Olga Kurylenko, Lewis Pullman, and Geraldine Viswanathan have been announced for the cast of the movie “Thunderbolts” set to release on May 2, 2025. This anticipated superhero film is expected to hit the big screen then.
