As a long-time Marvel fan, I have to say that Sebastian Stan’s journey as Bucky Barnes, or rather, the Winter Soldier, has been nothing short of extraordinary. From his humble beginnings as Steve Rogers’ best friend to becoming a brainwashed assassin, and now joining the Thunderbolts – it’s been quite a rollercoaster ride!
James Barnes, famously known as Bucky, has experienced quite an adventurous journey within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Ejected from a moving train in “Captain America: The First Avenger“, Bucky was subsequently frozen and mind-controlled to serve as HYDRA’s assassin (who supposedly assassinated JFK), saved by Captain America, and sent to Wakanda for recovery. Later, he turned into dust following Thanos’ snap, and now, mentally liberated, he roams free as the Winter Soldier. After 13 years of portraying this character, Sebastian Stan never anticipated that Bucky would join a new squad, as he is now part of the upcoming cast for Thunderbolts*, set to release in May next year.
While chatting with GamesRadar+ during the promotion of my latest film, “A Different Man”, I couldn’t help but reminisce about my journey portraying Bucky Barnes, and the fresh gang I’m joining in “Thunderbolts”. Essentially, this Marvel production is their take on “The Suicide Squad”. With a lineup of morally gray superheroes, “Thunderbolts” promises an exciting ride.
Afterward, Sebastian Stan elaborated on Bucky’s perspective regarding joining the new squad. As he put it, Bucky is striving for independence and wishes to steer clear of the team. However, an unexpected fondness towards the Thunderbolts* has grown in him despite his initial reservations. Stan elaborated:
I wouldn’t have imagined we’d reach this point with him, but it’s an intriguing ensemble, and each member seems to bring out unique aspects in themselves. It seems that [Bucky] is actually quite compatible with this group, even if he might not readily admit it. He’s always growing as a character, which I adore about him. It’s all about finding new ways to express his development. I believe the movie will be entertaining, and I think audiences will be eagerly awaiting its release.
Thunderbolts* Is Redeeming the MCU’s Failed Heroes
Apart from Bucky Barnes and possibly Yelena (played by Florence Pugh), the cast of Thunderbolts comprises characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe that have not received enough attention or development. David Harbour’s Red Guardian is set to receive more focus following his impressive debut in Black Widow. Notably, Black Widow also introduces Taskmaster (played by Olga Kurylenko), a character who has long been popular among Marvel fans and possesses incredible abilities to mimic and adapt to various fighting styles. Many assumed that the Taskmaster’s role in the MCU was finished, but there is hope they may become a recurring figure after their potential redemption in Thunderbolts.
In the matter of underdeveloped antagonists, the character of Ghost (played by Hannah John-Kamen) is also being offered a path towards redemption in the upcoming film, Thunderbolts. While Ghost served as the main villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s least memorable movie, Ant-Man and the Wasp, it’s understandable if you haven’t recalled her presence in the film, given that the storyline failed to leave a lasting impression or significantly contribute to the broader MCU narrative. However, similar to Red Guardian and Taskmaster, Ghost could make a fresh appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe if she proves to be an interesting addition to this new, possibly influential superhero team-up.
