In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes share a unique bond characterized by strong camaraderie and constant friction. They make for an intriguing duo, often delivering humorous moments, and it appears that their on-screen chemistry stems from the fact that the friendship between Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan off-screen is quite analogous.
As a film enthusiast myself, I’m thrilled to share that this year, Anthony Mackie will star in “Captain America: Brave New World” in February, while my beloved Bucky Barnes, Sebastian Stan, will take the lead in “Thunderbolts*” in May. During a recent chat on the Variety Awards Circuit podcast, Sebastian subtly poked fun at Anthony – all in good spirits, of course. Despite his stellar performances in critically acclaimed films like “A Different Man” and “The Apprentice,” which have garnered awards season recognition, 2024 was a relatively low-key year for Sebastian, as he didn’t share the spotlight with Anthony. He joked…
Talking about Thunderbolts, let me share with you that the past year was a more tranquil one for me since I didn’t get to work with Anthony Mackie. To put it simply, his absence was noticeable. However, every day I long for his presence on set, and it’s something I’m not comfortable admitting.
Although Sebastian Stan seems to be enjoying some playful banter with his friend, it’s rather surprising to call his year uneventful, given that spending time with Anthony Mackie apparently outdoes the whole Thunderbolts team in terms of excitement. Stan has likened the Marvel movie to The Breakfast Club due to its assembling of a group of mismatched characters. One can only imagine the action-packed nature of the film considering the impressive lineup of actors in the Thunderbolts cast.
Mackie and Stan featured in the second Marvel series on Disney+ titled “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier“. Their characters proved to be engaging partners as they played the roles of Captain America’s close friends, attempting to adapt in a world without him. Although their approaches to heroism were somewhat distinct, they worked harmoniously together. Now, each character’s individual journey will unfold as they step into the limelight independently.
In various Marvel films, including the Captain America series, Avengers, and The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, these two actors seldom appear separately. It’s not the first time Sebastian Stan has joked about making a film apart from Anthony Mackie. Making a Marvel movie without their co-star may seem unusual for both of them.
Stan’s statements suggest there won’t be crossovers between his or Mackie’s characters from their respective films this year. Earlier, when asked if he was in Captain America: Brave New World, Stan tactfully dodged the question. It’s plausible that Stan is indeed in the new Captain America film, but without sharing a scene with Mackie. A pre-credits scene in Brave New World could easily set up Thunderbolts*.
It’s almost unthinkable to feature these two characters in the same movie without having them interact at least once. They have an amazing chemistry and genuinely care for each other off-screen. While we might not get a chance to see them together in this year’s Marvel films, let’s hope it won’t be too long before they meet again on-screen.
