Sebastian Stan’s Shocking Reaction to His First Oscar Nomination for ‘The Apprentice’

Prior to Donald Trump being re-elected as President, a series titled “The Apprentice,” starring Sebastian Stan as Trump, was debuted at Cannes. In this biopic directed by Ali Abassa, Stan portrays Trump during his early career as a real estate mogul in 1970s and 1980s New York City. The film focuses on the relationship between Trump and influential yet controversial attorney Roy Cohn, who eventually became Trump’s mentor. From the outset, the movie garnered criticism from those who felt it made Trump appear more sympathetic, as well as from Trump himself and his supporters.

Regardless of the diverse opinions about the film, Stan’s acting was exceptionally subtle, earning him a nomination for a Golden Globe and now his first-ever Oscar nomination. In response to this recognition, Stan expressed an fittingly patriotic sentiment about this accomplishment (as reported by The Hollywood Reporter).

I’m left utterly speechless and deeply moved. It feels profoundly humbling to be in such a position, and it seems this is indeed the essence of the ‘American Dream.’ I am incredibly thankful to each and every one of you who turned the seemingly impossible into reality. A heartfelt thanks for your courageous acknowledgement.

In a notable match-up, Stan will go head-to-head with Adrien Brody (famed for his Golden Globe-winning performance in “The Brutalist”), Timothée Chalamet, Colman Domingo, and Ralph Fiennes. For his exceptional portrayal of Cohn, Strong was honored in the Best Supporting Actor category alongside Guy Pearce, Yuriy Borisov, Edward Norton, and Kieran Culkin.

‘The Apprentice’s Rocky Path to the Oscars

The reality TV show “The Apprentice” debuted at Cannes in May, and director Mohammad Nasser Abbasi revealed that he aimed to depict how Donald Trump’s early life experiences influenced him, suggesting that he didn’t believe Trump would be fond of the film. However, he was proven wrong. The show faced immediate criticism from the Trump campaign – a particularly harsh scene in the movie is based on an event mentioned in the divorce proceedings of Trump and his ex-wife Ivana, which she later denied. Spokesperson for the campaign, Steven Cheung, issued a warning:

As a devoted film enthusiast, I’m preparing to take legal action against these so-called filmmakers, whose fabricated claims are not only unfounded but also sensationalize long-debunked falsehoods. This is nothing more than a deceitful tale spun by the Hollywood elite, attempting to interfere in our elections. They seem to be under the misconception that President Trump will once again claim the White House, outperforming their favored candidate because, thus far, none of their efforts have succeeded.

Back in 2024, I was eagerly waiting for the release of this movie that had faced quite a challenge getting distributed in the US. Finally, it hit our theaters on October 11, mere weeks before the US Presidential Election. As it turned out, the film didn’t manage to swing enough votes to unseat Trump from the presidency – something we might have anticipated given its timing.

The movie “The Apprentice” is making its comeback in certain cinemas starting this Friday, January 31. The screenplay for this film is penned by Gabriel Sherman. In the cast, you’ll find Maria Bakalova portraying Ivana Trump, with Stan and Strong also featured prominently.

Though Stan’s recognition for “The Apprentice” was well-deserved, his exceptional acting this year has left many questioning if he should have been nominated instead. In the film “A Different Man,” produced by A24, Stan portrays Edward, a man suffering from neurofibromatosis, a condition that leads to tumor growth and disfigurement. After undergoing treatment, his appearance transforms, but his new look soon becomes a source of terror for him. Stan’s performance earned him the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Motion Picture (Comedy or Musical). “A Different Man” also garnered attention at the Oscars, being nominated in the Best Make-Up and Hairstyling category.
