A few days following George Clooney’s appearance on CBS News program 60 Minutes to publicize his new Broadway show, President Donald Trump took to social media to respond to the actor. While Clooney didn’t directly accuse anyone during his interview, he did remark that “governments don’t appreciate press freedom.” It seems his comments may have struck a chord, as Trump once more voiced his displeasure towards Clooney, branding him a “second-rate movie star.
According to Variety, George Clooney is currently marketing the stage adaptation of his 2005 film “Good Night, and Good Luck,” which garnered an Academy Award nomination. The movie, featuring David Strathairn as Edward R. Murrow, depicts the confrontation between Murrow, a journalist, and U.S. Senator Joseph McCarthy during the McCarthy era, when many Americans were falsely accused of communism. This conflict was often broadcast live on television, sparking a witch hunt. Clooney co-wrote, directed, and was nominated for Best Director for this movie.
During the promotion of the play, Clooney made an appearance on 60 Minutes, a CBS show that is currently embroiled in a massive $10 billion lawsuit filed by Trump, who claims the network and program attempted to deceive voters. This situation could be what Clooney is alluding to when he says, “Recently, ABC has settled a legal dispute with the Trump administration. And CBS News is still going through the process of doing so… We’re witnessing an effort to use government power to intimidate or fine journalists, making them less influential. Governments generally dislike a free press. This sentiment isn’t exclusive to conservative or liberal views; it applies across the board. They don’t appreciate the press.
In no time at all, the president swiftly prepared a response. Previously, it hasn’t been unusual for Trump to present Clooney in a negative light publicly, given that Cloony took part in The New York Times article urging Joe Biden to resign. Back then, Trump labeled him as a “sham actor.” More recently, via Truth Social, he has countered Clooney’s comments.
It seems strange that 60 Minutes would create a glowing profile (often referred to as a ‘puff piece’) about George Clooney, who is perceived by many as a mediocre actor and political commentator. After campaigning vigorously for Joe Biden during the election, he quickly distanced himself from him after their debate. Later, it appears that he was instructed by the Obama team to support Kamala Harris, but this didn’t go as planned. In fact, some claim that 60 Minutes manipulated Harris’ interview answers before airing it just before the election, which is considered one of the most dishonest and embarrassing incidents in broadcast history. Now, with Clooney back in the spotlight again, his publicist must be raking in the money!
‘Good Night, and Good Luck’ Arrives on Broadway Soon
The stage adaptation of George Clooney’s film “Good Night, and Good Luck” is scheduled to premiere on Broadway on April 3rd. Performances will continue until June of this year. Interestingly, Clooney himself will be making his Broadway acting debut as Murrow in the production. The play is being directed by Tony Award-winner David Cromer, and Clooney will collaborate with Grant Heslov once more to adapt the screenplay for the stage. Ticket prices have reached up to $800.
Experience the epochal era of television journalism during Edward R. Murrow’s (Clooney) groundbreaking, history-changing on-air debate with Senator Joseph McCarthy. In an America shrouded by McCarthyism, Murrow and his news team decide to challenge the escalating fear and misinformation, knowing it may lead to opposition from the government and a nation on edge.
Directed by Tony Award-winning director David Cromer, the film “Good Night, and Good Luck” is based on an original screenplay by George Clooney and Grant Heslov. It tells a story set in American history where honesty and journalistic ethics triumphed over fear-mongering and deception—and prevailed.
