Selena Gomez, David Henrie on Returning to ‘Waverly Place’: “It Did Feel Like Going Home”

As a fan who grew up with Selena Gomez and David Henrie on “Wizards of Waverly Place”, witnessing their return to the magical world feels like a nostalgic reunion of old friends. Their dynamic, which started when Selena was 15 and David was 18, has not only evolved into a successful professional partnership but also a genuine friendship that spans over a decade. It’s heartening to see them using their experiences as child actors to guide the next generation, fostering an environment for young talents to thrive.

Over a ten-year gap since the conclusion of their show “Wizards of Waverly Place”, Selena Gomez and David Henrie will revisit their enchanted past by starring in a follow-up television series.

The story of Wizards Beyond Waverly Place revolves around Justin Russo, now an adult (played by Henrie), who prefers to live a regular, human life with his family. However, this tranquility is disrupted when his sister Alex (Gomez) introduces him to Billie (Janice LeAnn Brown), a novice witch in need of Justin’s guidance.

At the Los Angeles premiere of the show on Monday, I couldn’t help but feel like I was returning home. It was hysterical when I shared it with my mom; she literally burst into laughter. She said, “You two still have it.” I believe we bring out the best in each other and that’s what makes our on-screen chemistry so special.

On the television series, not only do Gomez and Henrie act, but they also function as executive producers. This role allows them to pass along their insights from their childhood acting careers to upcoming generations.

Henrie shared that with our combined years of experience, we strive to offer our finest insights when collaborating with young individuals, particularly children. For me, creating an environment that fosters their growth is a priority. In other words, I aim to help them reach their full potential at any given moment. It’s been truly rewarding, as we’ve found some exceptionally talented kids, and they’ve continued to improve and excel.

Gomez mentioned, “All I can offer them is the love and encouragement they’ll likely require during this phase. I hope it’s an experience that significantly impacts their lives.

They additionally discussed their years-long friendship since the show “Wizards of Waverly Place” premiered, which happened when Gomez was fifteen and Henrie was eighteen.

As a gamer, I truly value having someone in my circle who’s known me since before the high scores and epic quests became part of my life. Most of my buddies are those I’ve grown to admire and rely on, but there’s this one friend, let’s call him David, who was with me when I first tasted the thrill of leveling up or facing a boss for the first time. He’s seen through all the digital glory, and he’s never shied away from telling me the unvarnished truth. That honesty is something I appreciate deeply.

Henrie said, “Since we’ve been friends for a while now, it seems to me that significant memories are created when friendships precede major events. These memories, I think, hold special meaning because you know so much about each other.” In response, Gomez joked, “I guess he’s my stuck-with guy.

The magical series “Wizards Beyond Waverly Place” makes its debut on the Disney Channel this Tuesday, with episodes also becoming accessible on Disney+ starting from Wednesday.
