The newly designated border chief under President Donald Trump has answered back to Selena Gomez and others who have criticized the arrests of hundreds of migrants nationwide. He suggested that those with concerns about the large-scale operation should voice their objections to lawmakers, as Gomez is facing criticism from Trump supporters and a former Republican Senate candidate.
In reaction to Gomez and others expressing concerns about the ICE raids during the weekend, Tom Homan, unrepentant in his stance, expressed to Fox News on Monday that those who are unhappy with the heightened activities should take their complaints to Congress and work on changing the law.
On Monday, Gomez shared a response video following reports that ICE made approximately 956 arrests on Sunday and over 1,100 arrests on Monday – significantly surpassing former President Joe Biden’s daily apprehension rate during Trump’s immigration enforcement campaign. These operations were conducted in cities such as Chicago, Newark, and Dallas, as part of heightened targeted actions. The raids followed Trump’s signing of multiple executive orders regarding immigration upon taking office, 21 of which focused on this policy area; these included designating drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations and declaring a state of emergency at the southern border.
In a now-removed Instagram post, Emilia Pérez, the actress, was seen in a video, weeping for 31 seconds while addressing the camera, following a massive wave of criticism from Trump supporters.
Gomez, born in Texas with roots in Mexico and Italy, expressed her distress to her 422 million followers, stating, ‘My people, including the children, are under attack… I’m at a loss. I’m deeply sorry. I wish I could help, but I’m powerless. I don’t know how, but I will do everything in my power and promise to try.’
For quite some time now, Gomez has been a strong advocate for migrants. In 2019, she took on the role of executive producer for a Netflix series titled “Living Undocumented“. This series offers insights into the lives of eight families in the United States who are living without legal documentation. Upon its release, Gomez penned an op-ed for Time magazine, expressing that the show portrays “the sense of shame, uncertainty, and fear I observed within my own family. Yet, it also showcases the resilience, hope, and patriotism that many undocumented immigrants still carry in their hearts despite the challenges they face.
On Monday, the 32-year-old celebrity stated, “It seems that expressing compassion towards others isn’t acceptable.” (or) “Following the removal of the video on Monday, the 32-year-old star commented, ‘It appears that displaying empathy is not deemed appropriate.’
In response to ongoing arrests and raids happening nationwide, Homan, who previously served as ICE’s acting director during the first Trump administration from 2017 to 2018 and has now been reinstated as Border Czar under Trump, quickly voiced his opinion on Fox News Monday afternoon.
He responded to Gomez’s video by stating that no families were arrested. Instead, we apprehended individuals who posed a risk to public safety and national security. Essentially, we will carry out our duties and uphold the laws of this country. If they disagree with our actions, they should approach Congress to change the law. We will perform our tasks without hesitation and work towards making our community safer.
Appearing on Fox News’ Hannity on Monday night, Homan reiterated his comments.
He pointed out that approximately half a million children have been trafficked into this nation, torn away from their families and delivered to criminal organizations for smuggling. Yet, this government seems unable to locate more than 300,000 of them. He asked, ‘Where is the compassion shown for them?’
On Tuesday, Gomez countered Republican ex-Senate candidate Sam Parker, who suggested expelling the artist from the nation in a post on X (previously Twitter). In an Instagram Story, the actor and vocalist playfully commented, “Well Mr. Parker, Mr. Parker. You provided some amusement and a threat.
Deport Selena Gomez.
— Sam Parker 🇺🇲 (@SamParkerSenate) January 27, 2025
On Monday, Parker, a candidate running for the U.S. Senate seat from Utah in 2018, shared on platform X: “Selena Gomez chose illegals over America because she is a third-generation descendant of Mexican immigrants who were granted citizenship through the 1987 Amnesty. Selena seems to have an entitled perspective towards America, much like her grandparents who were once illegal immigrants. Perhaps Selena herself should be deported.
On Monday, it appeared that Parker was overjoyed by the response his post garnered. He subsequently shared a screenshot of Selena Gomez’s Instagram Story and penned, “Selena Gomez acknowledged my post.
On Tuesday, an email dispatched to the law office representing Gomez by The Hollywood Reporter went unanswered after it was sent.
