Serial Killer Thriller Series ‘The Dark’ From ITV Studios’ Poison Pen Gets Green Light

ITV has ordered a chilling serial killer TV show titled “The Dark” from the production company of former BBC drama chief, Ben Stephenson’s team, known as Poison Pen.

The TV show, titled “Poison Pen,” was developed by Matt Hartley and is inspired by GR Halliday’s first book, “From the Shadows.” This series was introduced by Stephenson in 2023 under the ITV Studios production label.

In an idyllic Scottish wilderness, the chilling discovery of a young man’s body sets off alarm bells for detective Monica Kennedy. She suspects this could be the opening act of a horrifying series of events that will shake the very core of a peaceful rural community. As fear and suspicion mount, long-buried secrets emerge into the open, and the townsfolk slowly come to terms with the fact that a ruthless serial killer may be living among them.

As someone who’s no stranger to the shadows of human nature, I found myself drawn into an intensified game of hide-and-seek with a sly assassin, thanks to my encounters.

When her past catches up with her, she starts doubting her own decisions. Could it be her choices that pose the greatest threat to her and her loved ones?

ITV’s drama chief Polly Hill approved the production of a six-part series titled “The Dark“. Polly Hill described it as an engaging new drama that presents the fearless DI Monica Kennedy, who must track down a serial killer in this spine-tilling Scottish narrative. Matt’s adaptation is captivating and I am thrilled to collaborate with him on adapting this novel, along with the team at Poison Pen.

I can’t help but rave about “The Dark”! It’s a heart-pounding, edge-of-the-seat suspense that has me clinging to my sofa. The plot is full of unexpected turns, and the protagonist’s enigmatic past gives her an uncanny understanding of a sinister mind, all while stirring an overwhelming compassion for those caught in the killer’s path.

In this project, Stephenson, Preethi Mavahalli, Luke Woellhaf, and Fern McCauley will serve as executive producers, while Matt Hartley will be joining them in the same capacity. The series will be produced by Matt Brown, with Lena Rae and Nessah Muthy contributing to its writing. Gilles Bannier has been appointed as both lead director and executive producer of the show.

In 2025, “The Dark” is set to begin filming in and around Glasgow, and it’s being made in collaboration with ITV Studios, who will handle its distribution globally.
