Sesame Street SAVED?! Netflix Steps In!

In an important change for children’s educational programming, Netflix has taken over the distribution of “Sesame Street” after Warner Bros. Discovery chose not to renew its contract for the iconic series. Through a collaboration among Netflix, Sesame Workshop, and PBS, families nationwide will continue to enjoy new episodes of this cherished show.

The fresh agreement signals a major change in approach. Earlier HBO deals had postponed television exposure for the general public; however, Season 56 of Sesame Street will simultaneously premiere on both Netflix and PBS platforms—encompassing PBS Kids and its free streaming app. This dual release model, which integrates a streaming service’s extensive reach with the accessibility of public broadcasting, is being celebrated as a groundbreaking example of a public-private collaboration.

Through this special collaboration between the public and private sectors, Sesame Workshop aims to distribute their education-focused content to children globally using Netflix’s extensive network, while maintaining free access for U.S. communities on public television to their beloved ‘Sesame Street.'” – Sesame Workshop CEO Sherri Westin in a statement.

In similar terms, Paula Kerger, the head of PBS, reinforced this idea, highlighting how crucial the show is to the overall purpose of public broadcasting.

She firmly expressed her conviction that shaping education for our kids is among the most crucial duties we have towards the American public, and “Sesame Street” has been an essential element of this vital task for over fifty years. We’re pleased to carry on our collaboration in our efforts to make a lasting difference in children’s lives for many more years.

This year, the upcoming Season 56 is set to start with a fresh creative direction for the show. Previously magazine-style segments are no longer, instead, a more storyline-focused segment style has been adopted. Additionally, there will be an animated spin-off named “Tales From 123” accompanying each episode. The episodes themselves will follow Netflix’s release strategy by being divided into three batches.

For Sesame Workshop, this deal is particularly important since their previous negotiations with Warner Bros. Discovery didn’t work out, leaving them in search of a new streaming platform. Earlier this year, the organization encountered financial difficulties and had to make layoffs. However, some sections of the Sesame Street archive will stay on Max (renaming back to HBO Max), but most of the upcoming content will now be housed on Netflix and PBS instead.

I’m thrilled beyond words by this agreement arriving at a perfectly timed moment for Sesame Workshop as we gear up for our annual fundraising gala. However, what truly warms my heart is the assurance it brings that countless children, particularly those from less affluent families, won’t be deprived of one of the most influential and memorable educational programs ever aired on television.

This isn’t merely a streaming agreement—it’s about preserving cultural heritage. In an entertainment world that’s becoming more and more exclusive, Netflix’s unusual choice to offer free simultaneous access to Sesame Street via PBS stands as a significant shift from its typical closed-off approach.
