Severance: I Can’t Stop Thinking About Mark Running Away From Helena In The Restaurant, So I Asked Adam Scott And Ben Stiller Why He Did That

Beware! Spoilers for Season 2, Episode 6 of Severance lie ahead. If you haven’t watched it yet, you can catch up by streaming the series with an Apple TV+ membership, then return to read this post.

In the ongoing Season 2 of “Severance,” I find myself growing more intrigued by the evolving bond between Mark, Helly, and Helena. A recent episode revealed that Irv uncovered Helly’s true identity as Helena, meaning both her innie and outie have had romantic ties with Mark. This week, Helena chose to encounter Mark’s outie, but he was not entirely receptive, eventually leaving the encounter. Curiosity piqued, I posed questions to Adam Scott and Ben Stiller about this development.

Mark has been frequently associating with Helena, but his outward self is unaware that she’s more than just a powerful corporate figure. This discrepancy leaves him feeling uneasy when he encounters her at this restaurant, as Scott pointed out during interviews with the cast of Severance.

From what I can gather about Helena, she seems truly alarming. It appears that he views both her and her family as potentially dangerous, and the actions they’ve taken against him and his kin are downright chilling.

Nevertheless, there’s an undercurrent of magnetic attraction beneath their interactions, which leaves Mark puzzled and intrigues the audience as well since he has no prior acquaintance with Helly. As Adam Scott shared, this unexpected spark wasn’t something his character was prepared to handle.

In my perspective, when I observe their interactions, there seems to be an unexpected yet intriguing chemistry between Helena and themselves. Initially, I didn’t anticipate this connection, but when they converse, it’s as if they are magnetically drawn to each other in a peculiar manner.

In this scene, they were exchanging playful remarks, but when Helena mistakenly called Mark’s wife Hannah instead of Gemma, something noticeably changed in him. He grew increasingly uncomfortable with the conversation and, after saying their goodbyes, he quickly left the restaurant. Scott explained to me later that this is why Mark abruptly departed from the eatery.

Later, as if breaking free from some strange trance while conversing with this individual, he finds it necessary to make a hasty exit. The simple fact that he spoke with her and observed her is significant information, yet he has an uneasy feeling that this person might be getting dangerously close.

In light of Mark’s ongoing efforts to integrate his outer self with his inner one, engaging with a superior at Lumon might have been both disconcerting and intriguing. Moreover, there seems to be a subtle romantic undertone between Mark and Helly on the forbidden floor, which Helena skillfully exploited while masquerading as her innie. As a result, these emotions are simmering beneath the surface during their conversation.

Ben Stiller touched on this point during our conversation, explaining:

From a viewer’s perspective, it’s intriguing because we’ve witnessed their relationship develop over the past few days, one that seems quite personal or intimate. This raises curiosity about what emotions or experiences might still linger on their part, even after their supposed separation.

That’s an intriguing point I’d like us to ponder. Mark has been trying some unconventional methods during Season 2 to combine his inner and outer selves, which appears to be quite challenging for him. We wonder how this process is affecting him emotionally. Furthermore, in the context of this particular scene, we might ask if the feelings of his inner self towards Helly and Helena are being expressed?

As we proceed with each new episode airing every Friday on Apple TV+, let’s patiently wait to see what unfolds in the upcoming season. The profound thoughts shared by Scott and Stiller during previous episodes have piqued my curiosity, and I believe their wisdom will be instrumental as Season 2 progresses.
