- So Streaming Contributed to the ‘Severance’ Season 2 Postponement?
Three years can bring about a multitude of changes, and this is something that might be particularly evident to followers of the series “Severance”. Since its Season 1 debut in February 2022, the Apple TV+ show has encountered several setbacks, including a 148-day Writers Guild strike and rumored creative disagreements between co-showrunners Dan Erickson and Mark Friedman. Delays in production are increasingly prevalent these days, as seen with Netflix’s “Stranger Things” or HBO’s “The Last of Us”. Furthermore, with eight-episode seasons becoming the standard, some viewers might feel it’s not worth the wait to keep watching.
However, it’s not just about maintaining relevance; shifts in locations and child actors maturing can create continuity problems. The first season of “Severance” was a brilliant demonstration of pacing, skillfully building suspense and character tension, but if the climax was reached and then followed by a three-year pause, what purpose did that dramatic peak serve? And to make matters worse, changes in a TV viewer’s life may mean they can no longer continue watching – or at least not as enthusiastically as before. Fans on Reddit have expressed the personal impact of the delay for “Severance” Season 2, and it seems to be more significant than one might initially assume.
How the ‘Severance’ Production Delay Hurt Fans
Initially, it’s worth noting that since the series debuted, numerous viewers have commented on the unexpected addition to their families – a three-year-old child who wasn’t present when the show initially premiered.
One fan also reminisced about a lost loved one who they shared Severance Season 1 with.
This specific remark brings to light that television goes beyond mere entertainment for many; it fosters connections, generates memories, and cultivates a sense of familiarity or “home.” It sparks discussions, offers chances to delve deeper into topics, and helps build relationships. However, these valuable interactions can be compromised due to production delays, even though the team behind “Severance” wasn’t responsible for such issues. The current TV streaming model, as it stands, is proving to be untenable.
It can be quite challenging for an ordinary spectator to recall details about Mark Cobel’s mom, such as her religious beliefs conflicting between Innie and Outie Mark or the Lumon shrine having Charlotte Cobel’s hospital items. The saddest observation on this plot point came from a viewer whose own mother’s health declined during the time it took for Season 2 of ‘Severance’ to air.
So Streaming Contributed to the ‘Severance’ Season 2 Postponement?
In 2023, Variety highlighted the fault lines within the industry, which grew even more apparent during the strikes. This is their take on the ascent and decline of the streaming sector:
Back in 2023, Variety shed light on the underlying weaknesses in the industry that were further emphasized by the labor actions. Here’s their perspective on the ebb and flow of the streaming market:
For many years, creating pilot episodes for television shows followed an assembly line method, sticking to a consistent timeline. The signal for new projects would sound in January, when networks would choose around two dozen scripts to fund and produce as pilots. At that time, industry professionals often complained about the tight deadline for producing crucial series pilots within just three months before the May upfronts. Looking back now, it seems like a structured approach that’s been lacking during the Peak TV era, where binge-watching has become popular.
Nowadays, situations have shifted dramatically. As Chupack recounts, “It used to be all or nothing, but at least you knew your position after a pilot season.” However, the wait for confirmation on a greenlight can stretch endlessly now, and there may even be long gaps between seasons if a show is selected. On the other hand, productions on streaming platforms operate under less restrictive conditions. This means that creative disputes might delay a series’ production schedule without causing too much disruption.
A significant distinction between the former system and the current one lies in the structure of seasons, as multiple-episode series sometimes resulted in what are called “developmental episodes.” While this term might not be favorable to all, it provided opportunities for episodes to focus on character growth rather than just moving the storyline forward.
As a film enthusiast, I appreciate how fewer episodes per season in shows like Severance are packed with essential details that propel the narrative forward. In today’s fast-paced world, people enjoy watching such series while multitasking, whether it’s doing chores or enjoying dinner. However, recalling complex plotlines after a break has always been challenging; now, with our busy lives returning to normal post-pandemic, it’s an even more daunting task.
Business professor Charles Shreger from NYU explained to Marketplace why today’s streaming platforms are brimming with shows tailored for “background viewing.” He noted that while you might sign up for a streaming service for acclaimed dramas such as Succession, it’s the extensive collection of series that keep you engaged enough to multitask that really retain your subscription. As for Severance, it’s currently streaming on Apple TV+, with Season 2 set to premiere on January 17.
