As a die-hard fan of Severance, I can’t help but feel a twinge of sadness as today marks the finale of Season 2 on Apple TV. But fear not, fellow enthusiasts! This captivating sci-fi thriller isn’t vanishing from our screens any time soon. The brainchild of Dan Erickson that sparked into life in 2022 and quickly amassed a devoted fanbase before breaking records as Apple’s most-watched series, has been given the green light for another round – Season 3!
According to reports, the series “Severance” is set to return for Season 3. However, the precise timing remains uncertain at the moment. Previously, there was a two-year gap between Seasons 1 and 2. In a playful announcement made today, executive producer Ben Stiller described his time on the show as one of the most creatively stimulating experiences he’s ever had.
Working on Severance was one of the most creatively thrilling journeys I’ve embarked on. I’m informed that creating Season 3 will be just as enjoyable, although any awareness of these upcoming events will be erased from my memory like footprints in the sand upon completion.
Adam Scott, who plays Mark Scout and is also an Executive Producer on Severance, expressed his enthusiasm for returning for a third season by stating, “I am thrilled to get back to collaborating with Ben, Dan, our fantastic cast and crew, Apple, and the entire Severance team. By the way, if you happen to run into my alter ego, don’t let him know about any of this – I appreciate your discretion.
Despite ‘Severance’s Success, Apple Is Still Losing Money
Beyond just Scott, the TV show “Severance” boasts an impressive ensemble cast that includes Zach Cherry, Britt Lower, Tramell Tillman, Jen Tullock, Dichen Lachman, John Turturro, and Christopher Walken, among others. The series centers around the workers of Lumon Industries who participate in a “severance” program where their work-related memories are isolated from their main, everyday memories. Initially, it found a small but dedicated fan base, but its popularity soared significantly in its second season, captivating audiences across the board.
At present, Severance has garnered a 96% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, while fans rate it at 78%. Today, Erickson expressed his excitement for Season 3, stating that the prospect of creating more Severance with this world-class cast and crew is more exhilarating to him than any number of puzzle boxes (a reference to a popular toy called finger traps). He further added, “I can’t wait to carry on spreading joy, mischief, fear, and malice alongside these extraordinary individuals.
The announcement about the renewal of Severance arrived yesterday, following news that Apple is reportedly losing over $1 billion annually on its streaming content. Despite spending heavily to create top-notch productions, they seem to be seeing no returns. However, they manage to compensate in other sectors through their product sales. The question remains: for how long will they persist with this strategy before recognizing that their main challenge is visibility? Notably, there’s limited marketing effort put towards promoting Apple TV+ content, and at some point, a boundary must be set.
Today isn’t going to be the day for it, but fear not, fans of Severance! There’s definitely a Season 3 in development down the line. We’ll share updates as they become available, so stay tuned. In the meantime, why not revisit Seasons 1 and 2, which are currently streaming on Apple TV+?
