Ben Stiller, the director and executive producer of the Apple TV+ series “Severance,” has reassured fans that they won’t have to wait long after the Season 2 finale, titled “Cold Harbor.” The finale is due for release in the U.S. on March 20 and worldwide on March 21. Although Season 3 hasn’t been officially confirmed yet, Stiller has hinted that preparations are underway, and there won’t be a three-year gap between seasons this time around. This news is bound to trigger a Milchick-style Music Dance Experience among fans!
On the New Heights podcast hosted by Jason and Travis Kelce, Stiller was asked about the possibility of a three-year wait for Season 3. However, he clarified that this is not part of their plan. He hinted that they would be revealing their plans shortly. It’s interesting to note that Apple already renewed the show for a second season on April 6, 2022, even before the first season ended, ensuring fans that the storyline would progress beyond the finale’s surprising twists.
The filming for the second season of the show Severance started on October 3, 2022, with plans to finish by May of the next year. However, due to the WGA/SAG strikes in 2023, production had stop-and-go periods, causing delays and ultimately wrapping up in April 2024. After a nearly three-year break, the season premiered in January. Stiller showed appreciation for the audience returning to the series to learn about Mark Scout (Adam Scott), an employee of Lumon Industries, and his coworkers who are all part of the “severance” program that separates their workplace memories from their personal lives.
After a brief pause to regroup ourselves, we spent an impressive 186 days filming Season 2 of our show. Editing has been a lengthy process, but it’s heartening to know that our audience welcomed us back when we returned. Our goal was to attract viewers who hadn’t seen the series initially, and Apple did an excellent job promoting the first season. We also made every effort to generate buzz through press releases. Interestingly, Apple TV+ has evolved significantly over the past three years; it now boasts a larger viewership because we were among its initial shows.
What We Know So Far About ‘Severance’ Season 3
Although Apple TV+ hasn’t announced an official renewal for another season of Severance, there is strong anticipation that it will continue due to its exceptional performance on their streaming platform. Ben Stiller himself has hinted that the office drama isn’t wrapping up anytime soon. In February 2025, he mentioned to The Hollywood Reporter that a writers’ room was already in progress in Los Angeles for season three, only a few months after he told Collider that preparations were underway for the next chapter.
It’s crucial for us to maintain a clear direction in our storytelling, ensuring it’s purposeful for our audience. Apple has been understanding and considerate in this regard, focusing on the narrative rather than just prolonging a successful series. We believe that a story should run as long as it needs to, not simply based on its success. As we dive into Season 3, we are guided by this vision and are working towards a coherent end point.
On March 4, Stiller made an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live and shared that the team is actively working towards wrapping up the series. He explained, “We’ve figured out the ending, but figuring out how to get there creatively is the challenge.” At this point, he didn’t disclose how many seasons are planned to bring the story to a close. For now, viewers can look forward to the last episode of Season 2, which clocks in at 76 minutes and happens to be the longest episode of Severance yet. This means there will undoubtedly be much to discuss as fans eagerly await an official announcement for Season 3.
