Sex and the City

Visualize a world without Sex and the City, excluding Sarah Jessica Parker, or even consider a life for Sarah Jessica Parker sans Sex and the City. Remarkably, this almost became reality: the actress, who is currently gracing our screens in the continuation of the renowned series, And Just Like That, confessed that she attempted to step away from embodying the character that significantly boosted her career (with the exception of her portrayal of Annie on Broadway as a child, but let’s be honest: we all know her as Carrie, not Annie).

In the most recent installment of the “Are You a Charlotte?” Podcast, which is helmed by none other than Kristin Davis (Charlotte York), it was revealed that Parker was a guest and admitted her initial reluctance towards television. She had made every effort to convince HBO to release her from her contract following the show’s series pickup. In her own words: “I became panicked. When the show was green-lit, I thought, ‘I can’t be on a TV show! I’m not sure I’m cut out for that lifestyle.’

Explaining herself further, she went on:

In simpler terms, the person feels that the repetitive nature of doing the same thing over and over again in a long-running TV series isn’t appealing to them. Instead, they prefer the variety and constant movement that comes with working on different projects like plays, movies, or movie-of-the-weeks. They see themselves as a ‘journeyman,’ someone who moves from one project to another, rather than being tied down to a single TV series.

She expressed a strong desire for that lifestyle, stating furthermore that she informed her representative that she would offer her skills to HBO in order to meet her contractual obligations. Therefore, any films she’d take part in for an extended period. Fortunately for her and everyone else, her agent and the head of HBO at the moment (Chris Albrecht) managed to dissuade her from a rash decision. And from that point on, all she could envision was the potential and elegance of the project.

Initially, it transitioned from feeling restrictive and limiting to being full of endless opportunities. On the first day we began filming as a series, the set was just a street away from my home. As I walked to work instead of driving or navigating freeways, I realized, ‘I can walk to work.’ And once I arrived at the location, I never looked back.

‘Sex and the City’ Was An Iconic Show For Very Good Reasons

Following its initial success, “Sex and the City” continued for six seasons and two movies, leading up to a spinoff/sequel series. During its original broadcast, the show garnered seven Emmy awards, with two going to Parker for her exceptional performance. The main cast included Davis as Charlotte York, Nixon as Miranda Hobbes, Cynthia Nixon as Miranda Hobbes, and Kim Cattrall as Samantha Jones. Fans will be delighted to know that they can reunite with all of them (except Cattrall) when the third season of “And Just Like That” premieres on HBO Max on May 29, 2025.
