As a lifestyle expert with a deep appreciation for cinema and the arts, I find myself constantly inspired by the profound wisdom and experiences shared by legendary figures like Shabana Azmi. Her recent conversation with Humans of Cinema was nothing short of enlightening, offering valuable insights into the craft of acting and the misconceptions that often plague the film industry.
Actress Shabana Azmi, renowned globally for her iconic status, has captivated audiences for many years with her diverse acting abilities in various independent, mainstream, and international films. Lately, she debunked the common misunderstanding that a ‘perfect face’ guarantees acting talent, emphasizing that filmmakers sometimes harbor flawed assumptions about casting purely based on physical appearance.
In a talk with Humans of Cinema, Shabana Azmi expressed her viewpoint that raw talent is much like an unpolished diamond – it needs the right crafting to bring out its brilliance. She strongly endorses the importance of training in this process, highlighting how it significantly enhances an actor’s skills. Yet, she conceded that there are instances where some actors thrive without formal education, due to their unwavering practice and hard work.
The actress made clear that raw talent isn’t enough in the acting world, as something more than just training is required to succeed. She also challenged a widespread belief among filmmakers by stating, “I believe many directors mistakenly think they can rely on an actor’s face alone to carry a role. While a striking visage may land you the part, it won’t deliver lines convincingly.
In recollections about her experience in the film Patang (1993), Shabana reminisced about the initial shooting phases where she collaborated primarily with novice actors. A week into production, she breathed a sigh of relief as Om Puri became part of the cast, thinking to herself, “At last, here’s a seasoned professional actor.” She fondly expressed that it was a delight working alongside him. Furthermore, Shabana confided that Naseeruddin Shah has always been her preferred acting partner.
Today, Shabana Azmi is celebrating her 40th wedding anniversary with Javed Akhtar. On Instagram, she posted a heartwarming picture of them both deeply engaged in conversation. Shabana looked elegant in a pink suit and dupatta, along with a flower in her hair, while Javed looked charismatic in a white shirt and matching jacket.

The warm, elegant photo beautifully captures their bond. In her post, Shabana celebrated their lasting connection, expressing how Javed still brings laughter into her life after four decades of marriage.
