Shah Rukh Khan ‘did much later’ what Shammi Kapoor did in 1964, says Sharmila Tagore; ‘he was doing things like randomly breaking into dance’

As an ardent fan, I find myself transported back to the golden era of Bollywood, relishing the tales spun by none other than the enchanting Sharmila Tagore herself. Her reminiscences about her debut film, Kashmir Ki Kali, and her dynamic co-star, Shammi Kapoor, are like a melodious symphony that stirs my heartstrings.

As a seasoned authority on lifestyle and entertainment, allow me to share an intriguing tidbit: The esteemed actress Sharmila Tagore made her entrance into Bollywood in 1964 with the film “Kashmir Ki Kali,” directed by Shakti Samanta. In this debut role, she had the pleasure of collaborating with the renowned actor Shammi Kapoor, who was already a megastar at that time. During an interview, Tagore reminisced about Kapoor’s antics from yesteryears, which she compared to the performances of actors like Shah Rukh Khan, who emerged later in the spotlight. She fondly recalled how Kapoor would spontaneously burst into dance, exhibiting a whimsical frenzy that truly set him apart.

In a conversation with The Indian Express, Sharmila Tagore reminisced about her debut in Hindi films alongside Shammi Kapoor. As photos from their movie, Kashmir Ki Kali, were displayed, the actress found herself transported back to memories of filming in Shopian, Kashmir. Reflecting fondly on her co-star Shammi Kapoor, she candidly admitted that maintaining the same level of energy as her male counterpart was no small feat.

The actress from Naseeb added that while Kapoor was full of energy on set, he was also quite unpredictable. During rehearsals, Tagore said Kapoor would do one thing, but something different during the actual take. This made it challenging for her as a newcomer, yet she enjoyed working alongside such an individualistic co-star.

While reflecting on her past experiences working with the late actor, she brought up Shah Rukh Khan, today’s renowned star. Saif Ali Khan’s mother pointed out that in 1964, Shammi Kapoor was known for impromptu dance routines and displays of spontaneous madness, which actors like SRK embraced at a later time. She also mentioned that the 1964 romance movie boasted wonderful tunes, but she herself was quite apprehensive about dancing.

Contrastingly, her fellow actor Shammi Kapoor outshone her by approximately 200 times. As a result, she was primarily focused on matching his skills at that time. However, let me clarify, the actress from Dhadkan highly respects the current crop of actors and acknowledges their versatility in handling diverse roles, even those with deep emotional depth. Nevertheless, Shammi Kapoor, son of Prithviraj Kapoor, stood out as a one-of-a-kind talent.

Speaking as a die-hard fan here, I’ve just got to share my latest excitement! After all the anticipation, I finally caught Sharmila Tagore in her recent project, Gulmohar. What a star-studded cast it was, with Manoj Bajpayee, Simran, Suraj Sharma, Amol Palekar, and Kaveri Seth joining forces on this one! Can’t wait to see how their talents blend together in this amazing production!
