Shahid Kapoor wanted Imtiaz Ali to call him before fixing price for next film after Jab We Met: ‘He was like a self-appointed guide’

As a dedicated follower and admirer of Bollywood, I have always held Imtiaz Ali in high regard for his exceptional storytelling and unique cinematic vision. However, after learning about his bond with Shahid Kapoor, my respect for him has grown even more profound. The anecdote of Shahid as a ‘self-appointed guide’ to Imtiaz is truly heartwarming and indicative of the deep camaraderie between the two artists.

In Bollywood, Imtiaz Ali’s movie “Jab We Met,” featuring Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor Khan, is particularly well-liked. Lately, the director shared insights about his relationship with Shahid. He disclosed that Shahid has taken on the role of an unofficial mentor to him, urging Imtiaz to reach out to him before setting his fee for their next collaboration following “Jab We Met.”

In a recent conversation with Mid-day’s Sit With Hitlist, filmmaker Imtiaz Ali shared that Shahid Kapoor, his Jab We Met co-star, has been a source of guidance for him. Imtiaz fondly remembered Shahid’s advice, stating he would never forget it and is forever grateful. Imtiaz reminisced about Shahid suggesting to him not to set a price for his next film since their movie had found some success.

In simpler terms, Shahid commented that the movie was progressing well, and Imtiaz told him he could request a certain amount of lakhs. Later, Imtiaz revealed that Shahid had suggested he could ask for double the price or even more – up to 1 crore. Shahid passed on instructions to him, telling him not to make any decisions without consulting him first. Imtiaz also mentioned that Shahid seemed to be wary of being deceived by others, likening Shahid to a self-appointed guide.

Imtiaz further disclosed that his project following Jab We Met was Love Aaj Kal, a film featuring Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone. During a recollection of his discussion with producer Dinesh Vijan, he confided, “I made Dinu wait, and he’ll never forget it. Ask him yourself. He’s said, ‘Sir, the number you gave me, my head hit the ceiling.’ I replied, ‘You can fault Shahid Kapoor for that.'”

2007’s movie “Jab We Met” is widely adored as a timeless classic, still captivating viewers to this day. Its compelling narrative, memorable soundtrack, and the magnetic connection between the main characters are just a few reasons for its enduring popularity.

Discussing Imtiaz Ali’s latest projects, his film titled “Amar Singh Chamkila” premiered on Netflix in April 2024. Featuring Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra, this critically-acclaimed biographical drama tells the story of musician Amar Singh Chamkila.
