As a die-hard fan of both Shailene Woodley and Molly Ringwald, I must say it’s quite fascinating to learn about their unique encounter in “The Secret Life of the American Teenager.” It’s a testament to how life can sometimes play tricks on us, making us oblivious to the greatness that stands right next to us.
At first, Shailene Woodley wasn’t aware that the woman portraying her mother in The Secret Life of the American Teenager had fame as an ’80s teen idol.
During a recent interview on “Scene Selection” for Vanity Fair, the actress admitted that she wasn’t familiar with Molly Ringwald when they began working together on the ABC Family drama, which aired from 2008 to 2013. In this series, Ringwald portrayed Anne Juergens, the mother of Woodley’s character, Amy Juergens.
Woodley admitted that she didn’t recognize Molly Ringwald. At the age of 15, she didn’t have a television at home. So when everyone of her parents’ friends mentioned working with Molly Ringwald, Woodley was puzzled and asked, ‘Who is she? Why should I know?’ because she had never watched ‘The Breakfast Club’, ‘Sixteen Candles’, or any of her other movies.
Surprisingly enough, the actress from “Three Women” admitted that she hadn’t seen any of the films directed by John Hughes, which catapulted Ringwald to fame during her teenage years. Yet, it turned out to be advantageous in the long run.
In her eyes, she became more of a nurturing older sister-like figure to me, always emphasizing my individuality as a young person. She took care to preserve who I was and allowed me to be just a child, playing freely. She shielded me from premature maturity, something that is often expected in Hollywood, and I’m incredibly grateful for her protection.” – Woodley explained.
The actress from “Divergent” mentioned that her time spent on “The Secret” when she was younger taught her many things, such as crafting stories effectively and discerning which messages are appropriate to share with the public.
Prior to her debut on “The Secret Life of the American Teenager”, Amanda Bynes had already established herself, whereas it marked Ava’s Woodley’s inaugural lead role in a television series.
