As a dedicated fan of music biopics, I am thrilled to see Shailene Woodley taking on the role of Janis Joplin in an upcoming film. With her versatile acting skills and passion for the craft, she is undoubtedly the right choice to bring the legendary singer’s life story to the big screen.
I’m thrilled to pieces! The long-awaited biopic about the legendary Janis Joplin is edging closer to becoming a reality. It seems that Shailene Woodley has secured a $2.49 million tax credit from the California Film Commission for this project, as announced just yesterday. Can’t wait to see it unfold!
Woodley expressed that it seems likely Janis would be utterly delighted, cruising along the Pacific Coast Highway in her vibrant Porsche – a car that’s a reflection of her spirit – with the knowledge that her story is creating chances and financial support for the city and people who meant so much to her. This will be Woodley’s role and production.
The California Film Commission’s Film & Television Tax Credit Program is thanked for being the ideal location for our project, as we, the producers, believe that only California can capture the authenticity and truth of Janis’s life on screen. We are truly grateful to have been given the go-ahead to film here.” This is how the Big Little Lies star expressed her gratitude.
The Temple Hill-produced biopic about Joplin was eligible for approximately $10 million in production costs during a 30-day shoot in California, as per the state’s film office.
Joplin passed away in 1970 at the age of 27, and despite numerous attempts, a biopic about this iconic singer has yet to be made. Actresses like Amy Adams, Zooey Deschanel, Pink, and Melissa Etheridge had previously agreed to portray Joplin in various movies that unfortunately never came to fruition.
In total, the California Film Commission granted tax credits worth $51.6 million to 19 different projects, which will be filmed in the state. This also includes preventing the Universal Content Productions’ Suits LA series from moving to another location.
The show “Suits LA” is set within the realm of cinema and television, and filming in this location will significantly contribute to the series’ realism, as stated by the showrunner Aaron Korsh.
Other eligible ventures for local tax incentives encompass a revival of the movie titled “Community – The Film“, co-executive produced by Dan Harmon and Andrew Guest, which brings back the original cast, and a yet-unnamed Screen Gems production.
