Shammi Kapoor Birth Anniversary: When actor’s first wife Geeta Bali asked him to use lipstick instead of Sindoor at their wedding; Here’s what happened

As I reflect upon the romantic tale of Shammi Kapoor and Geeta Bali, two stars whose love story shines brighter than any Bollywood blockbuster, I am left in awe of their whirlwind courtship and impromptu wedding. The way Shammi proposed to Geeta at the Juhu Hotel, knowing full well she would likely decline, only to have her surprise him with a resounding “yes,” is a testament to the unpredictable nature of love.

In honor of Shammi Kapoor, Bollywood’s timeless and legendary actor, we recall a man not only acclaimed for his exceptional acting skills but also cherished as a beloved public figure. Known as one of the megastars of his time, Shammi Kapoor began his film career with Jeevan Jyoti in 1953 and reigned supreme on the Bollywood stage from the late 1950s to the early 1970s. As we celebrate what would have been his 93rd birthday on October 21, let’s journey back in time when his first wife Geeta Bali persuaded him to get married and even shared a sweet moment by applying “lipstick on her forehead.

Just as Shammi Kapoor’s acting prowess enchanted audiences, so did his romantic relationship with Geeta Bali win over many hearts. Their paths first crossed during the filming of Miss Coca Cola (1955), a production led by Hari Ahluvalia.

It wasn’t until Shammi acknowledged his feelings for Geeta that he started proposing to her repeatedly, yet she declined initially. But on August 23, 1955, during their stay at the Juhu Hotel in Bombay, he asked again, and this time, Geeta consented to his proposal of marriage.

Four months of pain, tears, and relentless efforts to capture Geeta’s heart finally culminated in an unexpected event one day, as Shammi found out.

On August 23, 1955, when he was at the Juhu Hotel in Bombay (as he had been by himself since his parents were with the Prithvi Theatres troupe elsewhere in Bhopal), he put forth his proposal to Geeta for a second time, anticipating her polite refusal with a smile.

In a past conversation with The Quint, I recounted the moment when I asked Geeta for her hand in marriage again, fully expecting another shake of her head and that radiant smile. However, she surprised me by saying something unexpected: “Alright Shammi, let’s get married… but it needs to be right now.

With assistance from companions such as Johnny Walker and Hari Valia, the couple, Shammi and Geeta, pledged their love at the Banganga Temple situated on Napean Sea Road in the southern part of Bombay, which is now known as Mumbai.

Shammi shared how Hari had gone through something similar, which guided them towards the famous Banganga Temple at the crack of dawn.

In spite of the torrential downpour, they managed to reach the temple, where Geeta was dressed in a slightly crumpled salwar-kameez and Shammi wore a kurta-pajama. With Hari Valia acting as the sole observer, the priest performed the traditional rituals, and they completed their seven rounds around the holy flame, thus legally tying the knot.

After pulling out a lipstick from her handbag, Geeta requested Shammi to dab it on the partition of her hair, symbolizing their union in a manner reminiscent of applying vermillion.
