As a gamer and someone who has followed Hollywood news for years, I was deeply saddened by the passing of Shannen Doherty. Her acting career spanned over four decades, and she left an indelible mark on television with her iconic roles in “Beverly Hills, 90210” and “Charmed.”
On July 13, 2024, Shannen Doherty, the beloved actress, ended her courageous battle against cancer that spanned close to a decade. Although she had openly shared her diagnosis and its consequences since 2023 when she revealed her terminal stage of illness, her passing left fans in disbelief. Having followed her career since the 1980s, these supporters were taken aback by the sad news at the age of 53.
Prior to her passing, Doherty managed to find sources of optimism during the last few months of her life, despite her challenging health outlook. She shared a video on Instagram in late June, recording an episode of her “Let’s Be Clear” podcast. In this episode, she spoke about her upcoming chemotherapy treatment and expressed renewed hope due to recent advancements in medical research and the possibility of improved treatment outcomes based on the changes in her cancer cells’ molecular structures. She shared her feelings, stating, “For the first time in several months, I feel hopeful. There are so many more options now than there were before.” Sadly, her treatment ultimately did not succeed, but it brings comfort to fans that she held onto hope until the very end.
Shannen Doherty’s acting career
Shannen Doherty made her acting debut at the tender age of 10, featuring in two episodes of “Father Murphy” back in 1981. In the following year, she joined the cast of “Little House on the Prairie,” portraying Jenny Wilder – Laura Ingalls Wilder’s (Melissa Gilbert) niece. Her breakthrough roles came in the late 1980s with films like “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” and “Heathers.” Although she has appeared on the big screen occasionally, her most notable work remains in television shows that significantly shaped her career.
From 1990 to 1994, she acted as Brenda Walsh in the hugely successful teen drama series “Beverly Hills, 90210.” Known for its abundant drama, both on and off the set, this show was a major sensation during the early 1990s. Later in her career, she found great success once more with the fantasy series “Charmed,” in which she portrayed the eldest of the three Halliwell sisters who discovered they possessed magical powers as witches. While these roles brought her significant acclaim, Doherty continued to work consistently throughout the 2000s, featuring in television shows such as “Riverdale” and “North Shore.” She also revisited earlier projects with cameo appearances on the television adaptation of “Heathers” and the revival of “Beverly Hills, 90210.” Her most recent on-screen credit was for the 2024 crime thriller “Darkness of Man,” alongside Jean-Claude Van Damme.
Addressing cancer on her podcast
Shannen Doherty revealed a breast cancer diagnosis in 2015, leading to a unilateral mastectomy as part of her treatment plan to contain the potential spread of cancerous cells. Despite doctors’ concerns that the cancer had likely reached her lymph nodes by then, she also underwent chemotherapy and radiation sessions. In a hopeful turn of events, she declared being cancer-free in 2017. However, unfortunate news came in 2019 when her cancer returned, this time more aggressive than before, eventually spreading to her bones and brain.
In November 2023, Shannen Doherty unveiled her new podcast project titled “Let’s Be Clear with Shannen Doherty.” The podcast officially debuted in December. Each episode explored various themes, with many episodes featuring Shannen and her former cast members reminiscing about their most iconic projects. Additionally, some episodes delved into topics from her personal life. A significant focus was on her cancer journey, as she shared her experiences candidly and honestly. The final episode, released on July 8, 2024, included a special appearance by Holly Marie Combs, discussing their time working together on “Charmed,” and the revival of their collaborative podcast, “House of Halliwell.”
