“Shape of You” Is Apple Music’s Most-Played Song

Apple Music has revealed that Ed Sheeran’s 2017 single, “Shape of You,” is its most played song.

To mark the 10-year milestone of its streaming service, Apple Music unveiled its list of the 500 most popular tracks that have been played. On Saturday evening, the last group of songs was disclosed, with The Weeknd, Drake, and Post Malone making it to the top five.

Apple Music revealed the top 500 songs streamed on its platform to celebrate its 10th birthday. On Saturday night, they unveiled the last set of these popular tracks, and The Weeknd, Drake, and Post Malone were among the top five.

Ed Sheeran’s hit single “Shape of You” topped Apple Music’s Top Pop Songs chart in at least one country for approximately five and a half years during the last decade, and it also reached No. 1 on their all-genre songs chart for over three years. When it was released in 2017, it set a new record for the streamer’s biggest pop song debut by first-day global streams. At that time, Sheeran had eleven tracks in the top 500.

In the second position among the top 500 tracks on Apple Music’s Global Daily Top 100 chart was “Blinding Lights” by The Weeknd, which remained in the top 10 for over 180 days. The Weeknd had a total of nine songs in the top 500, with his song “God’s Plan” taking the third spot. This song broke a record for most first-day streams upon release, just like Ed Sheeran’s 2017 single “God’s Plan.” Interestingly, Drake had more entries in the top 500 than any other artist, with nine songs also appearing in the top 100. Post Malone secured positions four and five on Apple Music’s top 500 with his tracks “Sunflower” from Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse (featuring Swae Lee) and “Rockstar” featuring 21 Savage, respectively.

Taylor Swift ranked second in terms of the highest number of songs in the Top 500, surpassing all other female artists with a total of 14 hits. The song “Cruel Summer,” which reached No. 57 on Apple Music, was her most popular track over the past decade. Out of Swift’s numerous albums, it was “1989” that had the most songs enter the Top 500; tunes like “Blank Space,” “Shake it Off,” “Wildest Dreams,” and “Style” all made the cut.

BTS, predictably, held the highest number of K-pop songs in the top 500. Their 2020 English hit “Dynamite” ranked at No. 34, while “Butter” was placed at No. 252. The most recent K-pop addition was a collaboration between Blackpink’s Rose and Bruno Mars titled “APT,” which came in at No. 459. As the freshest song on the chart overall, “APT” has been No.1 on Apple Music’s Global Daily Top 100 for over 60 days, according to a release, and it ranked among the top five songs of the last decade.

The Japanese duo Yoasobi had the most J-pop tracks on the list, with three songs making it to the top 500, including their debut single “Racing into the Night” at No. 500. On the other hand, the oldest song on the chart was Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody,” which ranked at No. 156.
