Warning: This paragraph contains significant spoilers for Season 2, Episode 6 of the series “1923“. If you haven’t seen it yet, consider watching it on Paramount+.
Whenever a major character meets their end on a series, it’s deeply affecting and tough to process. Yet, dealing with seven—that’s right, SEVEN—deaths within a single episode is nearly unimaginable. However, here I am, left in shock and struggling to make sense of it all following the intense 1923 episode that aired on the 2025 TV schedule.
It was fortunate that I could discuss recent developments with four cast members who portray now-deceased characters in the series. Interestingly, these 1923 cast members learned about their characters’ demises for the first time when they read the script.
Michael Spears Found Out About Runs His Horse’s Fate When He Read The Script
Prior to the fateful broadcast of “1923,” I got an opportunity to chat with Michael Spears as Runs His Horse and Jeremy Gauna as Pete Plenty Clouds. Tragically, their characters met their demise in this episode, leaving Aminah Nieves’ character Teonna bereft once more.
When I inquired about their responses towards their stories’ outcomes and whether they knew them prior to receiving the script, Spears, who portrayed a character killed by Father Renaud, shared this insight with me.
During the script reading, I felt a pang of sadness. It was a moment of sorrow for me. I yearned for a different outcome, but instead, it fueled my motivation to deepen the character’s emotional depth and his bond with his children.
I appreciate his viewpoint regarding the situation, and he later confided that he wanted to “give everything on the prairie,” which means he intended to give it his all or exhaust all his resources.
Yet, it’s troubling that they didn’t receive any prior notice. Consequently, just as we did, they discovered it naturally while the narrative progressed. This unexpected revelation stirred a whirlwind of feelings in them.

Jeremy Gauna Told Me Why He Felt ‘Anger,’ ‘Sadness,’ ‘Joy’ And ‘Greatful’ When He Found Out His Character Died
For Jeremy Gauna, there was an additional burden as he took on the role of Pete, which intensified when he learned the outcome of his character’s storyline. Originally, Pete was portrayed by Cole Brings Plenty; however, following Brings Plenty’s passing in April 2024, Gauna assumed the role. Here’s what Gauna shared about discovering his character’s destiny:
There’s a multitude of feelings, a great deal of anger, sadness, joy, bittersweet moments. As you can imagine, assuming Cole’s role had its challenges and responsibilities, which mirrored real-life events. It was intense, profound, and I’m deeply grateful for the experience. At the same time, it was a humbling experience too. In essence, all those feelings I mentioned are accurate descriptions of what I went through.
Pete made quite an impressive exit following a thrilling horse pursuit and gunfight. Gauna shared with me that capturing it on camera was breathtaking, and immersing himself in the script beforehand helped him deliver his best performance. Mirroring Spears’ sentiment, he expressed:
It enabled me to feel secure in pouring everything I had into this character, as I had no other resources left to offer.
It’s equally clear that Gauna and Spears, similar to myself, were taken aback by the untimely ends of their characters – neither of them had foreknowledge of their approaching deaths. This revelation left me stunned, and as I delved deeper into the story, it only intensified my astonishment to learn that even the fallen Dutton didn’t anticipate his own demise.

Darren Mann Didn’t Know Jack’s Fate, And Told Me About The Future He’d Imagined His Character
I inquired from Darren Mann concerning the sudden and startling demise of Jack, which was a result of being gunned down by individuals he believed were reliable. He then replied that he “was unaware of the circumstances” prior to learning about the incident.
As a devoted fan of Taylor Sheridan’s shows, I’m well-aware that they have a high mortality rate. Yet, I find myself drawn into the thrill, knowing that each scene could potentially be my character’s last. Despite this, I’ve allowed myself to imagine what lies ahead for him, sharing with you my dreams for his future.
In a quiet moment, I envisioned different outcomes where Jack would inherit the ranch, and in time, he’d become Kevin Costner’s grandchild, leading to a prosperous future. Regrettably, those scenarios didn’t unfold as planned.
As a die-hard fan of this gripping saga, the unexpected demise of Jack left me utterly stunned. What’s more, I was equally taken aback to discover that Mann wasn’t forewarned about it. When he shared with me that he felt an intense whirlwind of emotions upon learning the news because he is so passionately invested in his character, I could empathize completely.
I felt a whirlwind of feelings upon reading it, as I had developed a deep affection for the character and the role of Jack. I adore portraying Jack so much that I would’ve continued for another decade. Consequently, I was undeniably disappointed and melancholic.
I felt just as sad, for I hold a deep affection for Dutton, and it’s heartbreaking to think he won’t get to meet his child or be reunited with his uncle, Spencer, if he manages to return home. Yet, the winters in 1923 are merciless, the people are relentless, and the world of Yellowstone is unforgiving. Not everyone can survive such harsh conditions.

Paramount Plus: from $7.99 a month/$79.99 a year
If you’re interested in residing within the Yellowstone universe, you have the opportunity to stream all the series (except for ‘Yellowstone’) on Paramount+. Interestingly, their plans start at just $7.99 a month, or if you’d prefer, you can upgrade to include Showtime and ad-free streaming for $12.99 per month. Take a look at this deal!

Sebastian Roché Also Found Out When He Got The Script, But Knew His Character Would Eventually Meet An ‘Untimely Demise’
Although the unfortunate deaths of the three individuals mentioned earlier, as well as those of the two people with Alex, are undeniably tragic, the deaths of Marshal Kent and Father Renaud – who were traveling together – were not something I was sad about. In fact, I had been eagerly waiting to see how they would meet their end.
Regarding this matter, it was understood by Sebastian Roché, portraying Father Renaud, that his character’s demise was inevitable. Yet, he wasn’t informed of the specific circumstances surrounding his character’s end until he received the script for Episode 6.
It was clear that my end would come prematurely. However, when I encountered that scene, I must admit, it took me by pleasant surprise. After all, what an extraordinary way to depart, don’t you think? Surrounded by extremity and intensity. So, yes, indeed, it was a perfect finale for such an exceptional character, for who else could have played such a role.
His demise was quite spectacular, following a fierce altercation with Teonna that included heated coals, stabs, and several gunshots. With a literal (and justified) explosion, he met his end. Now that Teonna is free from this malevolent entity, she can embark on a fresh chapter in her life, as Roché put it, this conclusion was “a fitting culmination” to this storyline.
the cast found out about the events just as we did. Now, I’m left on tenterhooks, eagerly anticipating next Sunday’s season finale to uncover the unfolding story (and who among the characters might not survive). After all, this episode clearly demonstrated that no character is invincible.
