Shocking Bring Her Back Scene That Will Haunt Your Dreams Forever

CAUTION: This subsequent piece outlines some of the disturbing scenes in the recently released horror film Bring Her Back, in vivid detail. If you haven’t watched it yet or prefer to avoid graphic content, I strongly advise you to read with care.

In my opinion, Danny and Michael Phillippou have crafted not just a fantastic A24 horror movie for 2023 with “Talk to Me,” but a true A24 masterpiece. And with their second film, “Bring Her Back,” I think they’ve managed to create one of the best horror films of this year, as well as one of the most intensely disturbing movies in recent times.

As a passionate film enthusiast, let me share my thoughts on the latest A24 production that casts Billy Barratt and Sora Wong as siblings Andy and Piper, who find themselves in the care of foster mother Laura, portrayed by Academy Award nominee Sally Hawkins. Hidden beneath her welcoming demeanor lies a chilling, otherworldly secret. The movie’s supernatural aspects were undeniably spooky, but it was when this 2025 film transformed into a gruesome body horror that left me shuddering with an unnerving sensation I still can’t escape, that truly had me on the edge of my seat. If you’ve watched Bring Her Back, I’m sure you recall the specific scene to which I refer. Would you dare to revisit that chilling moment alongside me?

The Cantaloupe Scene

In my opinion (and likely many others), the most daring scene from “Bring Her Back” occurs when Andy attempts to bond with Laura’s foster child, the silent Oliver (Jonah Wren Phillips), by offering him some cantaloupe. However, he blunders by giving him the butcher knife he used to cut the fruit. The mere sound of the young boy biting the blade triggered my adrenaline rush, and seeing the kid viciously bite through his gums and having his philtrum sliced in half when Andy tries to retrieve the knife left me feeling like I was on the verge of exploding inside the movie theater.

I must admit, I needed a brief pause to summon the bravery to write everything down, as that chilling scene – featuring TopMob’s Eric Eisenberg reacting so vividly during an extended preview of “Bring Her Back” – has lingered in my mind like an unsettling echo ever since. The harrowing image of Oliver (tormented by a demonic possession at that moment) inflicting self-harm on his mouth haunted me throughout the night and the following day, leaving me immobilized with unease each time it resurfaced in my thoughts. However, this scene isn’t alone in its ability to unnerve me; there are other moments just as impactful.

Actually, Any Scene In Which Oliver Eats Had Me In Distress

A detail from the cantaloupe scene in “Bring Her Back” that I hadn’t discussed earlier, as it’s quite hard for me to revisit this part, is that Oliver not only drops a tooth when Andy attempts to remove the knife from his mouth, but also ends up losing more teeth by taking a few bites out of Laura’s wooden kitchen counter. This was not something I expected to happen, and seeing him lose his teeth in such an unusual way was particularly shocking.

It transpires that there’s a demon dwelling within Oliver, who is actually named Connor. This demon is part of a revival process requiring the consumption of the deceased’s body and soul, then regurgitating it into another host. However, this demon is desperate to find ways to quell its unquenchable hunger, leading it to devour Laura’s chickens and bite a large piece of skin from Oliver’s arm with its remaining teeth. This act elicited reactions from myself and many in the theater. Yet, watching him bite into the wooden counter left me feeling particularly queasy.

With These Scenes, Bring Her Back Taps Into A Largely Untouched Brand Of Fear

Witnessing a child in danger doesn’t bring me joy, not even when it comes to a creepy kid like the seemingly possessed Oliver. Frankly, I wouldn’t want to tangle with such a character. However, this movie left a deeper impact on me than any other horror film I’ve seen, and I believe the key factor is the teeth – they seem to carry an eerie symbolism that lingers long after the credits roll.

The idea of dental trauma hadn’t crossed my mind as something that could seriously disturb me, but after watching this film, I realized just how deeply it affects me. The scene involving the cantaloupe and the kitchen counter repeatedly brought up this theme, making it resonate with me in a chilling way.

In many horror movies I’ve watched, characters’ teeth often fall out suddenly, like in David Cronenberg’s “The Fly” and Coralie Fargeat’s award-winning “The Substance”. However, scenes depicting their violent removal are less common for me. Apart from a distressing scene from the 2016 pre-Civil War biopic, “The Birth of a Nation”, I can only recall one other instance. The Phillipou brothers’ unexpected exploration of my fear limits in their work has definitely increased my admiration as a horror enthusiast.

Although the troubling images in the movie “Bring Her Back” might seem exploitative at first glance, I don’t consider them as such. Instead, I believe they play a crucial role in enhancing the unsettling essence of this gripping tale. In truth, I think that with their work in both “Bring Her Back” and “Talk to Me“, Danny and Michael Phillippou have perfected a unique form of horror that is both gruesomely violent yet strikingly human.
